The Sorceress Supreme is Here! Jump in to Sorcerer Supreme #1 in this joint review with Shawn and Megan.

Doom has fallen, and with him the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto. Disintegrated along with Doom by the Living Tribunal, the magical emblems cry out in the void. The answer comes in the form of one Wanda Maximoff. As Dormammu takes advantage of the wards falling with the fall of Doom, he quickly learns that New Yorkers are not alone in their stand against him. Earth has a new Sorcerer Supreme, and it’s the Scarlet Witch.

Writing

Shawn: Man, talk about setting the tone right out of the gate. Steve Orlando quickly lets everyone know that this is going to be a little bit of grit and a little bit of chaos in the Sorcerer Supreme series. Admitting my own bias, I’m THRILLED to see Orlando bring in the bestest of boys Bats the Ghost Dog as well as the Sanctum Sanctorum’s twin talking snakes.

Megan: Steve Orlando continues to make Wanda’s story full of depth while paying homage to her past. The Sorceress Supreme is very headstrong in being successful in her new role and has brought on a powerful cabinet with her on this journey. It becomes clear that Wanda will need that backup. Wanda, who’s now the Sorceress Supreme, takes her job very seriously, even if others can’t see that. It’s of popular opinion that she’s not right for the job, but that doesn’t stop her from persevering in what she knows is the right thing.

Art

Shawn: Bernard Chang must have read Steve Orlando’s outline and refused to be overshadowed because, as good as the writing is in this issue, Chang’s art may be even better. The colors are beautiful. I really love Wong’s panels. Chang manages to make Wong’s outfit feel both familiar and updated. Don’t skip over the last pages after the story ends, where you can see Chang outline his design for Wanda and the detail he put into incorporating the various Sorcerer Supreme elements into the character.

Megan: With the start of an exciting storyline, you need to have artwork that packs that big a punch. I’d say the artists of Sorcerer Supreme #1 absolutely nailed that aspect and more. With Bernard Chang, Ruth Redmond, and Cory Petit on the creative team, there really was no way to go wrong here. The drawings are wonderfully detailed and beautiful, the colors are powerful and dramatic, and the letterings set the tone through the dialogue perfectly. The artists knocked it out of the park!

Overall Grade: 10/10

Shawn: 10/10. Overall, this is a great first entry into the new Sorcerer Supreme series.I love the dynamic between Orlando and Chang so far. I really can’t wait to see where this series goes. From new elements like the Council to familiar elements like Wong and Bats, this is setting up to be something great.

Megan: 10/10. If there’s anyone more than earned the title of Sorcerer Supreme, it’s Wanda. Taking on this new era of hers, Steve Orlando and co take Wanda to new heights!
