This recap of IT: Welcome to Derry is made possible thanks to screeners from HBO. For more from Matt at the Hops “Geek” News podcast!
The episode opens up in black and white in the year 1935 as a little girl is sleeping and gets woken up by a mysterious woman telling her to be quiet as she leads her down into a boiler room where they see a red balloon. Suddenly, Pennywise appears from within the doorway down the hall and cuts to the credits.
We’re then with Leroy and Will at their house in the aftermath of the sewers, where Leroy is demanding that Will not leave the house, causing a rift between the two as Charlotte attempts to intervene. As Will storms off, Leroy smacks him across the face, causing him to run away, and Charlotte stands stunned. Will meets back up with the gang as Lily is holding the mysterious shard that saved her life. She is frantic as anyone goes near it and refuses to let anyone hold it. She and Ronnie get into it as Lily wants to go back into the sewers using the shard and attempt to kill IT. Ronnie blames her for everything, telling her to go back to Juniper Hill and laves, storming off.

The town, meanwhile, is handing out flyers in search of Hank, who has escaped and is on the run. We see various townsfolk grabbing weapons and flyers as they are building a search party to hunt him down. Hallorann finally shows back up at the hangout spot he was able to get for his fellow Airmen, looking for any bottle of liquor he can drink. As he attempts to hide away, his friends tell him they need to talk, and it is revealed that Charlotte had hidden Hank at the nightclub to Dick’s dismay.
Emotional Reunions
Will had chased after Ronnie, and the two shared an emotional hug in the streets as Will’s mother, Charlotte, arrived, telling them to get into the car. She takes them to the nightclub where Ronnie reunites with Hank. Back at the rooftop hangout, Marge tries to change her eye bandage as Rich appears and offers to help her out. She is shy at first, but Rich helps her anyway and remarks how it is the coolest thing he has ever seen as the two bond and become closer. The next day at school, the two are sitting at the lunch table when the Pattycakes show up, telling Marge to come hang with them and ditch the freaks. Marge stands up, removing her bandage, and leaps at the crew, telling them she is a freak and establishing herself with Rich and the gang.
We meet back up with Hallorann, who is in his room drunk, when Leroy appears, asking him what happened to him. He explains that his grandmother taught him at a young age how to lock all the spirits he sees inside the box that is now open. He tells Leroy that as long as he pays the spirits no mind, they leave him alone as well, and refuses to go with him to help out. Leroy tells him he is his superior officer and buried his best friend, causing Hallorann to scream at him to leave, and the two ended on uneasy terms. Leroy gets home, and Charlotte announces that she is leaving and that she hid Hank at the Black Spot. She plans to get him out of town and to get her and Will back to Shreveport, and when Leroy is done doing whatever he is doing, he can join them.
Will, Rich, and Marge go to the Black Spot where they meet up with Ronnie to convince her to stick together and fight IT. Will has a chat with Hank who tells him he doesn’t want to let her out of his sight again. Lily is headed to Ingrids house to ask for her help to which she finds nobody is home. She lets herself into Ingrids home and heads upstairs where she finds a photobook and pictures of Ingrids father who looks exactly like Pennywise.

Ingrid finds Lily and realizes she has seen Pennywise, who she thinks is her father, and begins to tell her a story. It is revealed that Ingrid was the housekeeper who took the little girl down to the boiler room at the beginning of the episode. While down there, they encounter Pennywise, and she calls him her father, to which he acknowledges Ingrid. Pennywise chases them and catches the little girl, who is then eaten by Pennywise, leaving Ingrid watching in horror. He then shows himself in the window of the door, pretending to be her father, telling her to open the door. Lily then realizes that it was Ingrid dressed as a clown that night, and she followed them to the cemetery, hoping to catch a glimpse of her father, causing Lily to run away and escape.
The episode cuts to the police chief who enters a bar, announcing she knows where Hank is hiding, but since he was relieved of duty, there is nothing he can do to a group of men sitting at a table. We then go back to the Black Spot, where Marge and Rich have “Air Force Soda,” ending up drunk and dancing, and Rich is then asked if he can play drums. The night is going well as everyone is having a good time dancing and listening to music when a line of cars pulls up to the Black Spot. One of the airmen is outside talking to a girl when he asks them to reveal themselves, and we see it is the mob of men looking for Hank as the episode cuts to Ingrid dressed in her clown attire and we cut to credits.

Final Thoughts
We know that a defining event and the last time that Pennywise is seen is at the Black Spot massacre, where he is seen as a bird above the flames as Will escapes. We know Leroy survives because he is Mike Hanlon’s grandfather, who tells us how Will ends up being murdered as an adult. Ingrid adopts her husband’s last name and is seen in IT: Chapter 2, where she attacks Beverly when she comes asking questions. It appears this season is going to leave us off at the Black Spot massacre, and it is unclear if the kids will have any other confrontation with Pennywise outside of this event. Lastly, shoutout to Marge for completely redeeming herself and becoming a favorite!
