The episode kicks off reliving the terrifying night in the theater as Lily awakens to it being a nightmare of the events prior. We cut to two cops hanging outside of the Capitol Theater as Ronnie’s dad is being watched and accused of killing the three children and linked to the deaths of the other children as well. Inside their house, Ronnie was listening to her dad and grandma talk about the situation and fears for her father, having known what really went down at the theater.

Meanwhile, Leroy’s wife Charlotte and son Will have finally arrived at their new home in Derry, full of excitement at the new possibilities. Back at school, Marge is setting out to impress the ring of girls she wants to impress so badly and joins in with making fun of Elaine having a crush on a boy, to which the girls shut. her down, showing that they don’t see Marge as one of them. It’s another ordinary day in Derry as hardly anyone pretends that anything has happened as Marge talks to Lilly about how she is doing and how she feels she has been ignoring her. Patty and the other mean girls have coaxed Marge into getting Lilly to have lunch with them and stop talking to Ronnie whose father is accused of murder.

Will shows up to class, and one of the students pulls his chair from him, showing that racism is still alive and well in this town. Leroy is told that Masters was found and sent away for his actions against Leroy in the barracks. He recalls the gun that was used and makes light of the situation before leaving. Charlotte is going around town finding her bearings when she sees a group of kids beating up another kid while people watch with indifference until she steps in, causing everyone to look at her strangely. They discuss what happened at dinner which Leroy makes subtle mentions to how Charlotte is always bringing attention to them such as with bricks through their car window and other things.

That night Ronnie is attempting to fall asleep as her bed turns into a womb trapping her and when she finally escapes she sees her mom sitting there blaming her for her death. Pennywise is playing tricks more won the kids and their fears despite not showing as her mother’s stomach opens up launching an umbilical chord aaand stomach opening up as a mouth as his eerie eyes stare form within. Ronnie bites through the chord in gruesome fashion and screams causing her dad to enter the room showing us nothing truly happened.

Hallorann and his friends are out on the town when they see the police chief being interrogated by two public figures as to why they haven’t arrested Ronnie’s father. They threaten him with being replaced if he doesn’t do his job and arrest the man promptly. This prompts Hallorann and his crew to leave urgently, despite having special passes not being welcomed to the bar. They head back to base, and Hallorann shows off that he has special privileges as the gate guard calls in and is told to let them go at once. This continues to build the mystery around Hallorann, who is a prominent figure in other King properties such as The Shining.

We get answers the next day at a dig site where Hallorann has led the military to a dig site where they are searching for something yet to be revealed. Back at the school, Ronnie confronts Lilly, telling her that the thing came back to her last night. Lilly reveals that she told the cops that she wasn’t sure what all happened, but she knows it wasn’t her dad, and if she doesn’t tell them, her dad will be taken. Lilly explains how she can’t go back to where she was taken as the Patty Cakes group pounds on the table louder and louder. While in detention, Will and Ronnie bond as Ronnie watches Lilly being taken by the police chief, who is interrogating Lilly. He bullies her about her past and how she is essentially a suspect if she doesn’t provide evidence and how people hear stories and will make things up. He tells her she will be going back to Juniper Hill as it cuts to Hank being taken by the police.

Ronnie shows up at Lilly’s house, confronting her about what she said and how her dad was taken to jail as Lilly’s mom threatens to call Ronnie’s grandmother. The next day, Leroy confronts Masters in jail and sets his gun on the bench, telling him that he wasn’t in his room the other night, as there is no way he handled the Soviet style gun. Masters grabs the gun, failing to use it, proving that Leroy was right in his theory. He confronts General Shaw, telling him that Masters wasn’t the person who attacked him. Shaw tells him that he set him up as a test and asks him to hear him out before reporting him.

The episode wraps up with Lilly in the grocery store shopping as a jar of pickles turns into her father’s face and attacks her, causing her to panic. We cut back to Leroy and General Shaw, who explain that they are in Derry looking for a weapon to stop the Cold War. This weapon creates debilitating fear, and they don’t know where it came from, but it is surrounded by objects, and if they find those, they can secure this weapon. Lilly is dropped off at Juniper Hill once again, and Shaw and Leroy are interrupted to find that they have found something at the dig site, revealing the car from the beginning of the first episode of the series.

IT: Welcome to Derry continues to ooze with callbacks to other Stephen King franchises and digs into the horrifying lore of Pennywise and his origins. Episode 2 brings us closer and at the same time raises more questions to be had. It’s not too late to catch up on this gut-twisting blood blood-filled series!
