*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Episode one of HBO’s new thrilling series has kicked off shockingly, and it’s now available. The show begins at the Capital Theater, where The Music Man is playing, and the tune “Ya Got Trouble” is being performed. Matty (Miles Ekhardt) is the first child we meet, and he is caught sneaking into the theater to where he gets caught and heads out on the run. We see him sucking on a pacifier and hitching a ride with a family who happens to be headed out of town, making this his lucky day!
The family has a child who loves to spell, and the situation devolves from there as the mother begins to give birth in a very violent manner, as the rest of the family spells the word out. The child is a demon baby with wings who begins to attack Matty, causing the vehicle to wreck and killing Matty.

Only the Beginning
Meanwhile, four months later, pilot Major Leroy Hanlon (Jovan Adepo) arrives at the base located in Derry as he is set to take on the assignment of piloting the B-52, which is in the testing phase. HE experiences the usual racism seen in 1962. While he waits for his family to arrive, Leroy is attacked in a mystery in his dorm room that night, to which his friend and fellow pilot, Pauley, comes to his rescue and helps save him, as the attackers wanted the plans for the secret bomber. The next morning, it is revealed that the attacker was the same Airman who refused to salute Major Hanlon and had been sent away along with the other attackers.
Back at school, Teddy (Mikkal Karim Fidler) and Phil discuss how they feel bad about having to have been bribed with candy to attend Matty’s birthday party, as the kids are struggling with his disappearance. Phil (Jack Molloy Legault) is obsessed with the base and their operations, thinking they have kidnapped aliens ignoring anything Teddy has to say.
Lilly (Clara Stack) was close to Matty and heard his voice in the bathtub that night, and saw two bloody fingers appear from the drain. She tells the two boys who dismiss her for thinking she is still struggling over her father’s death, which had caused her to be sent to a psychiatric hospital. The three ultimately set off to find Matty, along with Ronnie (Amanda Christine), who was at the beginning of the episode and helped Matty escape the theater, as she is the daughter of the owner and changes out the reels.
The gang decides to watch The Music Man to look for clues as to where Matty was taken since he was watching it that night, and Matty appears in the movie trying to escape. The episode takes a dark and horrifying turn as the demon baby from the start of the episode appears and attacks the crew. Phil, Teddy, and Phil’s sister Susie (Matilda Legault) are brutally killed by the demon, as we are quickly shown this series is willing to take risks and hold nothing back, leaving us with a shocking ending for the season premiere.
Andy Muschietti shows us with this shocking episode, It: Welcome to Derry is going to go places we have not seen yet in a show, as well as expand upon the mythos of Pennywise himself. The series premiere builds upon an already excellent year for horror and sets us up for a thrilling and terrifying season ahead of us.
