The Writing
After Spider-Man went MIA in his hero duties, Felicia Hardy, AKA Black Cat, decided to take matters into her own clawed hands and be the hero the city needed. Of course, this would be harder than it looked, but Felicia was ready to take on the challenge.
Her first mission is a money-laundering scheme that involves vampires, ran by the Manfredi crime family. With a spooky mission, a new motivation, and being a changed woman, there’s no stopping Felicia’s plan on being a hero. That is, until she finds out about the plans against her happening behind the scenes.
I didn’t know how I’d feel with Black Cat being in the hero role, but G. Willow Wilson is all gas and no breaks in Black Cat #2. While it’s very different to see Felicia fighting the good fight against crime, it also still feels very authentic to the character.
Felicia stays motivated to be the hero, even when she’s speechless against the vampire chaos. Along with Felicia, there’s another hero who leaps in to save the day, even when Black Cat is insistent on wanting to save the day on her own. While I never thought of these two heroes working together, I have to say, I really want to see this team up happen again.
The Art
Gleb Melnikov, the artist of Black Cat #2, does a fantastic job at combining the street level life of Black Cat and the mystical energy of the immortal. With Black Cat having to go against a vampire, there’s a great level of spookiness that drives the comic to match the tone of the story.
Along with Melnikov, Brian Reber handles the colors of the comic. Working with the contrasting colors that often comes with Felicia Hardy, and the excellent amount of detail from Melnikov, you get a great street level hero story with a creepy monstrous undertone from the villain.
Overall Grade – 8.4/10
Black Cat #2 shows us Felicia putting her hero plans into play, and gives us a good idea of how hard she wants this change. I’m loving what G. Willow Wilson is doing with Black Cat an can’t wait to see what’s next!
