Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday of May (tomorrow), where participating comic book shops offer free comic books to visitors to spread the love of comics for free!
What Happens?
On FCBD, publishers release special edition comics—often previews, exclusive stories, or introductory issues—for anyone from newcomers to longtime fans.
For example, this year’s offerings include Marvel’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion” and Post Malone’s dark ages-themed comic “Big Rig” with Vault.
No Local Store? No Sweat!
Some publishers, like DC and Marvel Comics, release some of their FCBD titles digitally.
You should always try and support your local comic shop, but if it’s too far away for you and the family, here are a few ways you can still participate!
FantasyVerse!
The new platform out of the Fandom and Fanatical universe offers free content early!
FantasyVerse kicks off Friday and is available until Friday May 9.
The website will completely transform for the event and will feature new content from the likes of TMNT, Start Wars, Mass Effect, as well as classics like Cyberpunk 2077.
The free content will drop in waves, so make sure to continue to check the site all week, as new issues are added each day.
In addition to free content, FantasyVerse has incredibly discounted bundles that value up to $100, for just $8. So if the free content gets you hooked, stay and read for a discounted rate!
Marvel
Much like FantasyVerse, Marvel is also offering up free comics in stores and online.
some of the popular characters feature include Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and much more.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN/ULTIMATE UNIVERSE (2025) #1, FANTASTIC FOUR/GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1 and others will all be dropped on various platforms.
So check back at Marvel.com to see what’s released online.
DC Comics and ComiXology
In the past, DC has published their FCBD offerings online through platforms like ComiXology.
Make sure to check their website, including the ComiXology platform to see what they plan to launch again this year.
All In #1, Superman’s Good Guy Gang #1 and more are part of DC’s lineup, though it’s undetermined what will be available online.
Midtown Comics
As a New York guy myself, you have to appreciate large comic shops like Midtown offering a slew of free issues online starting the Monday after FCBD.
MyComicShop.com has also been known to participate, though they sometimes require a purchase before they can choose a free online title.
