I saw Captain America: Brave New World, and there was a message that stood out to me as I was watching. Fair warning: spoilers ahead!

The first MCU film of the year is finally out as Anthony Mackie picks up the Star-Spangled shield once more in his first solo outing as Captain America. While critics may not be high on this film, I do feel as though it was a fun movie with perhaps a deeper message that the world could use right now. The film has Sam Wilson working side by side with the American government despite everything that has happened with the Sokovia Accords and the turbulent history Ross has had with heroes. The film features the Leader, who was imprisoned by Ross, extracting revenge and nearly causing all out war between allies (why that would never happen, would it?) over a precious new mineral Adamantium (one step closer to the X-Men baby!)

So what is this message I seem to have found within this film? Let’s start with Sam Wilson, who, despite everything has taken up the mantle as Captain America and has once again brought the shield to fight and stand with the American Government. At a point, Isaiah Bradley asks why they hunted and imprisoned him at a point. Sam’s message was a simple one, which was to show people there was hope out there. The world has been snapped, attacked, and had a giant Celestial coming up from the core of the Earth, and they could use hope. Steve Rodgers brought the world hope, and Sam has promised to do the same.

Looping this into the real world, in which every time we open our phones, there is less and less hope out there, I feel that this message is one that we need right now. His message is that people are divided, and we need to come back together. I truly feel that the message extends beyond this movie and that we all could take that to heart and come together as a society once more. Another angle and message I found is that Sam is always there for Isaiah and refuses to forget about him or leave him behind. Both are military veterans who have had their country cast them aside and forget about them in various forms.

This, again, has hit home for me. I am also a vet and have seen how veterans have often been forgotten about or cast aside once they are no longer useful. These two messages that I took from this film struck a nerve and drew me closer to the film.

Overall, I liked Captain America: Brave New World. This was a movie that had heart, humor, and spectacle in it. The action scenes were well done, and Sam never was going to defeat Red Hulk in a pure one-on-one fight. I found the ending to that sequence to make sense for what Sam’s enduring goal and message was. The film felt like a direct sequel to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which is an underrated MCU film in my opinion. There were two major cameos, one of which was Bucky, who even tells Sam he loves him before departing back to the campaign trail. The other was one I have been screaming about for 16 years! Liv Tyler reprised her role as Betty Ross after all this time and I could not have been happier that we at least had her existence acknowledged!

The film sets up the upcoming slate of MCU movies, and I feel is a return to form for Marvel. It feels good to see red, white, and blue as a tool for hope and good again with.

My rating: 8/10 overall
