Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing issue #67 of The Amazing Spider-Man from Justina Ireland & Marvel Comics!
Things have NOT been going well for Spider-Man lately, and I might be underselling that. Doctor Doom is now the sorcerer supreme (no joke) and he’s named Peter the champion of Earth in his place against the eight scions of Cyttorak. And while Peter was able to hold his own against the first few scions, but things took a turn. He witnessed the deaths of everyone he cared about and decided to turn his back on everything. So just what happens now? Let’s jump into it!
The Amazing Spider-Man #67 by Justina Ireland (writer), Andrea Broccardo (penciler), Scott Hanna (inker), Marcio Menyz (colorist), Niko Henrichon (flashback sequence artist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (letterer), Patrick Gleason & Richard Isanove (cover) is a very compelling issue where the title character is not necessarily the main focus.
The story is split between Peter’s ongoing emotional struggle after witnessing all of the deaths. He’s currently hanging out with Felicia Hardy and content to let the world pass him by. But that doesn’t mean that the ongoing battle between Earth & the scions is on pause. Stepping up in his place is a team lead by Cyclops of the X-Men.
Like I said, the story is compelling because Peter is NOT the main focus of the issue. Yes, he plays into the story in his own way but he is NOT the driving force. The battle with Cyclops & co vs the scion is. I really enjoyed the story, because it showed a side of Peter I have not read before. While it also showed that Peter isn’t the only hero in his story that’s willing to get their hands dirty.
The artwork by Andrea, Scott, Marcio & Niko is top notch from start to finish. It’s some of my favorite artwork in Spider-Man that I’ve read recently, outside of maybe Ultimate Spider-Man. It really adds to the story and the art pops off the page so incredibly well.
FINAL POINT: A great issue & great artwork blend together for an issue that hasn’t been done in quite some time where Peter is not the driving force of the issue. Just how things will continue remains to be seen. But for now, the entire creative team behind The Amazing Spider-Man are doing some of the most incredible work with the title in quite some time. This is an issue you’re not going to want to miss!
Overall Score: 9.5/10
