With all the hype surrounding the Wicked movie, it’s the perfect time to revisit Oz! Fans of Twig or L. Frank Baum’s timeless novels will find much to love in Patchwork Girl of Oz #1 (Image Comics). My 10-year-old daughter, a budding comic fan, joined me for this special review to give her perspective too!

Written and Drawn by: Otis Frampton

The Writing:

Marty: Otis Frampton crafts an easy-to-follow story that’s perfect for kids and new comic readers. The plot unfolds at a nice pace, introducing Ojo and his mysterious uncle as they face hardships. The narrative leaves plenty of intrigue, especially around Unc’s limited dialogue and mysterious past. This journey-based story has strong Twig vibes, with characters set to uncover both the magical world of Oz and themselves.

Hallie: The story is very mysterious and adventurous at the same time that leaves me with more questions than answers.

The Art, Colors, and Letters:

Marty: The whimsical, cartoonish art style makes it accessible and fun for all ages. The character designs bring a magical feel to the world, particularly in the colorful backmatter that teases future appearances. Frampton’s visual storytelling shines in key moments, like the opening panel viewed through a warm, glowing hearth. The vibrant purple tones and blues used in magical settings perfectly set the mood.

The lettering is clever, with Unc’s unique font hinting at his mysterious nature, adding depth to his sparse dialogue. These details enhance the story’s immersive quality and build anticipation for what’s next.

Hallie: The Art was not colorful at first but it slowly got more colorful as the story went on. The art was well done for the story type. I liked how the font changed when a different person was speaking.

Final Thoughts:

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

Marty: Patchwork Girl of Oz #1 is a heartwarming, beautifully crafted start to a series that’s great for families and young readers alike. My daughter loved the magical vibe and colorful art, and we’re both excited to see who else shows up on this whimsical journey through Oz.

Hallie: This issues is long enough to keep you hooked and have questions for what is coming next! I loved the concept and being able to see the Map of Oz that we are going to get to explore.
