The Art and Lettering:

Hervas continues to draw in a gritty manner which is perfectly suited for the horror genre that the team is aiming for in this run. As the team enters into the jungle of the unknown the setting is drawn in a manner that lends itself to the suspenseful and mysterious vibe. The creatures are drawn innocently but, when things begin to get hairy their inner demons slowly come out. Hervas slowly shifts into that aspect and a standout is when Medusa shockingly turns on a dime in a frightening way.

Alex’s coloring fits perfectly into this gritty style of art as the coloring gives off a rough texture you can almost feel coming from the panels. The style assists with building suspense and clashes uniquely with the jungle setting that the tea is dropped into. When it comes to the creatures and the foes they battle there are metallic-like colors added showcasing there is something more to this island. I continue to love how Medusa, Lucky, and the others have a scratchy color given to them making this run intriguing from an art perspective.

Ferran ties the art together giving life to the surrounding area and characters through the letters. Lucky for example you can almost hear the deep growls emitting as he battles the monsters in the issue. Medusa’s ear-piercing shrieks leap from the panel as well and Ferran compliments perfectly.

The Story:

David is working expertly giving the reader just enough while also keeping us in the dark as to what the government knows and isn’t telling our team. Shrieve is crafted into the perfect military a-hole that you just hope meets a satisfying eath which is the sign of a well-written character. He does a wonderful job making our monsters sympathetic as they are walking into the unknown but, is also shown to have a soft and caring side to them. The way Medusa softly speaks to Lucky is a shining example of excellent character depth which, when dealing with monsters may not be expected.

Final Thoughts:

As we begin to reach the climax of this 6 issue story, the team gives us hard-hitting action mixed in with a slow and suspenseful sense of dread. There is something awaiting our team and it has me hooked and eager to find out just what fates await them. The characters have added depth and the imagery sticks with me in every page flipped. Six issues may just not be enough time with these characters.
