Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man from Jonathan Hickman & Marvel!
This issue is an interesting one as there isn’t a whole ton that happens action wise, but there is an interesting bit of character development between two characters. So without further ado, let’s jump into it!
Ultimate Spider-Man #9 by Jonathan Hickman (writer), Marco Checchetto (artist), Matthew Wilson (color artist), VC’s Cory Petit (letterer), Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson (cover artists) feels almost like an interlude in the overall story. Things happen, but it doesn’t feel like it’s advancing the overall plot. The issue is fine, but it doesn’t blow me away like previous ones have.
Ben Parker & Jonah Jameson have a meeting regarding their fledgling newspaper with Mary Jane. Things are going well, but in terms of what this means right now is impossible to say. I’m sure it’ll come into play later.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Harry & Peter meet up with Otto, and discuss Peter getting a new suit that isn’t so tied into Stark Industries. He has an almost inner monologue with what I’m guessing is the symbiote that hasn’t gone evil…yet. What Otto has prepared for him is cool to see, but Peter turns him down. So unless the suit shows up down the road, and I’m guessing it will, it feels kind of pointless right now.
The only real interesting part is when Harry & Peter have a discussion on a rooftop after their meeting with Otto. They end up getting attacked by Black Cat because of their pervious actions. The battle ends a little contentiously between Harry & Peter and to me, it’s the start of the inevitable cracks that are going to form between the two.
FINAL POINT: The issue is a fun read, and really interesting in terms of character development. But if you’re looking for a knockdown drag out fight, then this isn’t the issue for you. The scenes between Harry & Peter at the end of the issue are the real highlight, and is the start of a point I think all the readers have been waiting to see start happening. Despite the misstep that is this issue, I fully anticipate the next one will be a return to form.
SCORE: 6.8 out of 10
