Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the one shot issue from Cavan Scott & Marvel Comics!

This issue serves as a bit of a character exploration for one of the Jedi that was introduced during the first and only season for the Disney+ series The Acolyte, Kelnacca. Kelnacca is a wookie Jedi only one of two that are currently in Star Wars cannon as far as I’m aware, and please feel free to reach out and correct me on that if I’m wrong. So what do we find out about Kelnacca, we’ll let’s jump into it and find out!

Star Wars: The Acolyte: Kelnacca #1 by Cavan Scott (writer), Marika Cresta (artist), Jim Campbell (color artist), VC’s Ariana Maher (letterer) & Phil Noto (cover artist) is an interesting story of character exploration of a new character that in my opinion has a lot of potential.

The issue focuses on a character Yarzion, who’s a Jedi Master and at the end of their life. Yarzion is at the end of their life and is reminiscing on their life and relationship with their own Master, Kelnacca. It’s a touching story that starts right after the destruction of Starlight Beacon. It’s a nice story that really adds some depth to a character we didn’t get to see a whole lot of in the tv series. Kelnacca doesn’t say one word throughout the whole issue, but he still manages to get his message across to his padawan.

MORE STAR WARS!

Kelnacca and his Padawan are shown in a couple of short stories that take place over the course of a few years, before it ultimately returns to the present and the conclusion of the issue. And while the conclusion isn’t exactly shocking, it’s still a very touching ending to a one shot issue.

My favorite part of the issue is the flashback scenes between Kelnacca & Yarzion. We haven’t gotten to see too many examples of a Padawan & Master except for during the Clone Wars. So to see this in a different time period was an enjoyable read.

FINAL POINT: It’s not the most earth shattering issue in recent memory, but it’s still a fun issue to read regardless. It adds some great depth to a character that didn’t get a lot of screen time and it’s a great exploration of one of the newest characters in Star Wars. It’s worth the pickup if you’re looking for some light reading or just looking to pass the time with a fun read.

SCORE: 7.0 out of 10
