The latest hit Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte hit the platform this week, releasing not one but two episodes on June 4th. However, some were left confused about why Mae (played by Amandla Stenberg) was a force user battling Jedi without more than a group of knives.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE

Prior to the Sith being all but wiped out during the great war with the Jedi and adopting “the rule of two,” the Sith were numbered in the thousands and had a grand army. Like the Jedi, the Sith had adopted the master and apprentice model of force-wielding. However, unlike the Jedi, the Sith apprentice is destined upon a path to kill their master and assume the mantle for themselves. Before they could do that, though, the apprentice would need to find a worthy apprentice to train eventually. Under this model, the Acolyte would need to prove themselves by killing a Jedi, taking their lightsaber to bleed their Kyber Crystal, and completing their ascension into the ranks.

In the show we see Mae asking for the help of a masked Sith, and instead of being tasked with killing one Jedi, she must kill four. We see Mae in the beginning minutes kill Indara ( played by Carrie-Ann Moss) and seemingly earn her lightsaber, and yet she leaves it behind. In the subsequent battle against Sol, Mae is once again grasping for his saber in battle to no success. That leaves us questioning whether or not she must complete the task and take the final Jedi’s lightsaber or if there is more at play here than we are told so far.

The series is only two episodes in and has already built upon the long storied history of the Sith culture. New episodes will be released every Tuesday at 9 pm est through July 11th.
