When we left off with Jackpot and Black Cat, Jackpot, AKA MJ Watson, had to complete a crime per the Obscura’s demands. With the help of Black Cat, or Felicia Hardy, she handled the heist with perfection. Surely it can’t get worse than having to break the law, right? Well, it sure can. Turns out Felicia’s girlfriend, Amelia, is working with the Obscura under the name Bandwidth and Felicia knows about it.

Diving into #3

Felicia checks her phone and sees multiple missed calls and frantic text messages from MJ. MJ knows who Obscura is and it seems that Felicia is in danger. Then there’s a knock at the door that belongs to MJ and Paul with croissants in hand. Under the guise of wanting to meet Amelia, they all sit down for a lovely breakfast with each other. The tension there could easily be cut through with a knife.

After excusing herself to the bathroom, MJ and Felicia get a moment alone for MJ to warn her about her villainous girlfriend. To MJ’s surprise, Felicia knows all about it. After MJ tries to reason with Felicia about Amelia and the danger she brings, it becomes clear that Felicia loves her and can’t let go of Amelia.

Plans interrupted

Not willing to give up on her friend and her safety, MJ decides to somehow convince Felicia to see reason. But of course, her plan is put on the backburner when Obscura strikes. Jackpot and Paul have to fight their way out of all of the civilians carrying out Obscura’s orders, and even some more obscure villains.

The Art

The artwork of Jackpot & Black Cat #3 is excellent just as the first two installments are. I’ll never get tired of seeing Black Cat and Jackpot in their suits. Everytime Jackpot uses her bracelets, the artists showcase their incredible skills with all of the colors and the look of whatever powers she lands on. I also think the artists for a great job at showing the emotion on Black Cat and Jackpot. Also, the cover art! They always look so good and matches the tone of the comic book run very well.

The Writing

Celeste Bronfman does a great job keeping you captivated in every scene. The third installment does a great job with continuity while adding more factors in that allow the plot to thrive into a bigger storyline. The writing feels very authentic to the characters and the situations. For example, you could feel the tension at the breakfast between Felicia, MJ, Paul, and Amelia. And you could feel MJ trying to break the awkwardness with her quirkiness.

Final Thoughts

Jackpot and Black Cat continue to show how deep their loyalty goes for each other. Their friendship continues to grow as the stakes get higher and higher. Something random I really enjoyed is that Paul gets a bigger role than just the off screen “guy in a chair” trope. I would say the third installment of Jackpot & Black Cat does a great job of keeping the same energy as the two issues. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in the Jackpot & Black Cat #4!

I give this an 8 out of 10
