What happens when a bumbling cowardly idiot stumbles upon Benjamin Franklins ritual for immortality? Well, our resident tool Simon is about to find out as this foolish yet, slightly loveable British Soldier obtains the ability to not only die but, also to come back to life in this trip through American history.
The Art:
Right from the jump this story brings us a burst of fantastic colors as Brad Anderson puts his whole arsenal to use bringing this story to life. An example is the use of green against the dark of night against the British uniforms that leave us absolutely mesmerized by the panel before us.
Meanwhile, Bryan and Andrew leave us some splendid pages with an insane amount of detail. The fine illustration of Paul Revere’s horse kicking up dust and dirt all the way to the gorgeous one-shot pages we are left with throughout show why this is my most anticipated comic of the spring.
MORE GHOST MACHINE!
The homages to movies such as Indiana Jones were another pleasant surprise as we are painted the portrait of just who Simon truly is at his core.
The Writing:
The Art may be a powerhouse but, let’s not pretend as though the writing isn’t also akin to having Tyreek Hill to Patrick Mahomes. The way Simon is self aware of his shortcomings while narrating this story endears us to him almost immediately.
He is almost an innocent bumbling idiot unintentionally and it’s fun and lighthearted while, Simon finds himself in one perilous situation after another. Having Benjamin Franklin be the reason Simon gains his power is a fun surprise that I couldn’t help but laugh at. Comics need more original stories and this one has all the makings of a classic.
Overall:
Ghost Machine is here. Simon’s long-awaited debut did not disappoint. He’s immortal, he’s endearing, and he is an idiot. This tale has it all so far and certainly will have something for comic lovers from across the board.
Seeing American History in a satirical and made-up light from a Brit who stumbled into this power excites me. I can’t wait to see where this story goes, and this one should be in everybody’s pull pile for every release.
10/10 Cigars.
