The Immortal Thor #7: Epic Trials and Endless Tribulations

Published:

Loki continues his tale of the time he and Thor traveled to the halls of Utgard and faced the treacherous trials of the Utgard-Loki. The Skald of Realms still claims to be the greatest enemy to The Immortal Thor, all while a larger tale is being told in a universe beyond! What is Al Ewing up to with mythos of the God of Thunder?!

The Immortal Thor and The New Lore

First of all, every week we get a literal masterpiece by Alex Ross on these Thor covers. It’s almost worth picking up the book every week just for that reason alone. Now I know the old adage is “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but lucky for us when it comes to The Immortal Thor, we can expect the same standard inside each issue.

What Al Ewing is doing with Thor is not unlike what he did with The Immortal Hulk. He’s pretty much crafting new lore for the God of Thunder, while reestablishing boundaries for what had become a boundless character. With the becoming the All-Father, it would seem to make him nigh untouchable, but with the introduction of the Elder Gods, Ewing introduces physical limitations for Thor once again. On top of that, the All Fathers sleep puts a limit on Thor’s magic as well.

Al Ewing Takes The Immortal Thor Into The Unexplored

It’s fascinating to watch Ewing construct while deconstructing. I can tell that there’s this reset coming to Thor and it’s gonna be wild when it happens. This issue really drives home the point that no matter how strong or “worthy” Thor is, there are some things he just can’t do. The trials of Utgard-Loki are seemingly simple and almost silly at first, but when the lesson is revealed, it’s eye opening…and yet in the face of it all, Thor will not yield.

The other angle this series has explored thus far is a little more “meta”. Minotaur of the Roxxon Corporation has purchased the rights to Marvel Comics in an attempt to smear the enemies names and damage their brand. With Enchantress involved, it changes the story dynamic. Of course it’s obvious in this issue that she has an ulterior motive. It’s still not quite clear just yet what the endgame is, but with the announcement of “Roxxon Presents” it seems to have something to do with the corporation having their own brand of superheroes!

The Art of The Immortal Thor

The images in Thor have been breathtaking thus far. I feel like almost every panel could be made into a single work of art. Martin Coccolo’s has an artists eye that rivals the best. From small details, to creature creations, Coccolo nails the mark on every page.

When you add the vibrant colors by Matthew Wilson, You can’t help but look at each panel just a little longer, even after finishing the word bubbles. I think it’s even more impressive that he’s doing it all with basic colors: red, blue, green, yellow, white black, etc.

Everything Points To 9/10

Each book feels so much like an epic hero poem, written and acted out by story tellers around the communal fire. I find myself invested in what happens next, yet I want to hang around and take in a few more moments of the beautiful artwork. The pacing of the book is perfect, and the action flows from panel to panel, building towards something, all while Thor and Loki play off of each other and have some great moments! I don’t exactly know what to expect next and I think that’s exciting! You gotta get on this book before it’s too late!
