The Schlub’s sixth issue delivers an explosive finale as Roger and Cirrus face the ultimate battle against Wyrm. The city is under siege, and readers are in for a wild ride filled with internal and external struggles. The creative team, led by Ryan Stegman, Kenny Porter, Tyrell Cannon, Mike Spicer, and John J. Hill, shines in this extra-long issue.

With an extra long issue and the end of an arc we had to get more of the bull pen involved! Sit tight as Matt, Lauren and myself break down this beast of an issue!

In this issue, Roger and Cirrus navigate multiple fronts in an intense showdown. The internal and external struggles are expertly woven, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Despite the relentless action, well-timed breaks provide moments for character development, enriching the narrative. The unpredictability of the story’s conclusion adds excitement, leaving readers eager for more.

Things got a bit dark in issue 5, but issue 6 came back full force with the action and the comedy. What at first seemed to be a simple fix to the classic body swap problem (we just need to switch back), showed to be far more complicated. And our “hero” turned out to have a bit of a murky past. To quote Captain America in Infinity War, “We don’t trade lives.” This seems to be the standard in figuring out who the real heroes are. Without ruining the ending, I’ll just say, I didn’t see it coming, but loved where they went with it. I think this may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Stegman and Porter did not give us the traditional hero outcomes. They ramped up their character development to a ten in this issue tying loose ends yet, leaving that door open. You can feel Roger and his growth and just how far he has come which really endears him to you with the decisions he makes in this issue.

The Art, Colors and Letters:

The series maintains its high enjoyment factor with vibrant and dynamic art. Action leaps off the page with intense lines and hyper-bright colors. The lettering, especially onomatopoeia, enhances the visual experience, adding motion to the overall composition. Wyrm’s prison design is a standout, featuring alien creatures within a giant creature – a visually stunning concept.

The paneling techniques contribute to the overall pace. Diagonal panels heighten action sequences, while traditional shapes slow the narrative for crucial moments. An innovative paneling technique highlights the soul cradle’s movement, aiding readability and adding suspense.

The art has been gorgeous and full of beautiful colors and details from the first issue on. However, this issue took it up an extra notch. The fight scenes went the extra mile, where dialogue was not even needed. No detail was spared, and every page had heart and action on it.

Tyrell steps up his game in this action-packed finale. There are layers upon layers of detail and gorgeous imagery galore in this finale. Down to the minute, details of Roger’s costume ripped or Cyrrus bludgeoned to near death every panel has an insane amount of detail and color that shines so brightly and has been a standout since issue 1.

Final Thoughts:

The creative team’s synergy propels The Schlub to new heights. This issue excels in storytelling, art, and design. As the arch concludes, the series leaves readers satisfied and hungry for more, eager to explore the world and face the looming threats ahead. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for our dynamic duo of Roger and Cirrus!

From beginning to end The Schlub was action packed, comical, mysterious, and fun to read. While I enjoyed the ending, I enjoyed the question mark after the words, The End, even more. I would love to see more of Roger and Cirrus, as well as some Wyrm back story. However, the story stealer for me personally, were the hilarious bad guys. Definitely pick up this run, if you haven’t already. It’s a fun and not so black and white take on the ‘Hero v. Villain’ story meets Freaky Friday.

If this is all we get from this universe and this team, they left it all on the table in this issue. The Schlub is a story about personal growth and overcoming ourselves. Having Roger stay in his new body, and the dilemma of killing one to save a thousand was really well done here. I need more from these guys and from this world; I hope we get it.
