The Recap:

Our story centers around Cleo Newman who begins the story in a mental institution for having Depressive Disorder and Psychotic Features and appears to be seeing ghosts and gets thrown into a breakdown which the doctors chalk up to her hallucinating.

Upon her being released after spending two months in the hospital and returning to school we see something more has happened to cause where she had been as whispers spread throughout as she walks down the halls.

After seeing a giant spider above her bed to which her dad does not believe her, Cleo runs away and is faced with a ghost calling her on behalf of the fate of the world. Meanwhile, at home, her father is on the phone with a mysterious woman who had warned this day would come.

The Art:

Marco and Andres do a splendid job of recreating the old-school style of Japanese horror that has a classic yet mesmerizing aspect. The various demons and the way they are drawn let our imaginations run wild mixing with the color choices Andres chooses to go within the beautifully haunting shades of blue. The duo brings us visuals that break the mold of traditional-style horror and bring us to dark and scary avenues.

The story:

Ethan and Naomi bring us a deeply traumatized yet mysterious character in Cleo. They hook us in from the start leaving us wondering what will happen next is this a traditional haunting? Or is there more and by the end of the story leave us dying to know what her mission is and how she can save the world? It is a refreshing take on the horror/paranormal genre pushing past the stigmas of mental health while also highlighting just how hard they can be to live with each day.

The Wrap-up:

Taking us back to the beloved Japanese-style paranormal stories that we fell in love with, A Haunted Girl gives us a tale full of mystery and intrigue. There is a layer of depth yet to be unfolded with Cleo and her story which leaves us gripping each page. If issue 1 is any indication of the monsters we will be faced with then fans are sure to be in for a treat.
