LETTERS TO THE EDITOR #2 – NYCC HERE WE GO!

Welcome back to an all new Nerd Initiative Letters to The Editor. It’s been a minute since I’ve done one of these but that’s because the NI Bullpen has been blowing up with coverage and the biggest event of 2023 on the horizon: NEW YORK COMIC CON (October 12th-15th, 2023)!

Starting in 2006, NYCC has grown immensely in size and content. Located at the Javits Center, the event has become a staple for fans of all pop culture!

Now heading into it’s 17th year, the buzz surrounding this years’ even has been HUGE! The NI team broke down what to look forward to at this year’s even on the season two finale of fandoms:

But before it’s time for the event, Here’s a quick checklist of what you should bring as you head to the event:

  1. Your Badge – Don’t leave for the show without it and without it activated.
  2. Backpacks – with all the swag and collectables at NYCC, you’ll need something to store them in. Flare it out a bit with some patches/buttons of your favorite fandoms. I guarantee it will make for some conversation starters with fellow fans in line.
  3. Refillable Water Bottle. Cons can be very warm. Stay hydrated. Snacks are a great idea too. Buying food and drinks at the show can add up on the wallet. Keep that in mind and maybe shift that food money over to buying some other merchandise.
  4. Maps! You have to know where to go and how much time is needed to get there!
  5. If you’re buying any collectable poster art, bring a poster tube to put it in. No sense of ruining great art by folding it into pieces.
  6. Portable phone charger. Do NOT be the one stranded with a dead phone battery when you meet a celeb and can’t take that pic for IG or TikTok. This can definitely make or break a moment.
  7. If you’ve got a charger, you’ll need your PHONE/MOBILE DEVICE. Make sure to be following NYCC’s account along with what guests you’re planning to see via their social media accounts. It’s the best way to stay up to date with any late minute changes.
  8. Other essentials you might not think: Hand sanitizer, tissues, gum/breath mints and band aids. They’re something fans might not really think about but all are good to carry.
  9. It’s NYC in the fall plus the Javits is gonna be VERY warm. Dress for weather accordingly.
  10. IF COSPLAYING (which will be awesome to do), bring necessary repair kits (pins, tape, etc.) to make sure costumes don’t get ruined. Remember: Cosplay DOES NOT EQUAL CONSENT! Be respectful of everyone doing the art and ask before taking pictures.
  11. Have Fun. Cons are a great way to make friends and express fandom (always be respectful of other congoers) so enjoy the time and make some friends and memories.

As for the event itself, we’re talking comics so here’s my Top 5 Panels to hit for Comics:

MARVEL: Next Big Thing – Saturday – 3:15PM – 4:15PM EST | Room 405

The House of Ideas has a HUGE weekend planned, but no panel should have more info than this one. Ultimate Spider-Man by Hickman? Avengers: Twilight? The end of the Krakoan Era for the X-Men?! Trust me, this is gonna be heavily talked about after the show.
