South Asians In ‘Polite Society’ Kick Their Way Into Success!

0

What better way to open the doors to Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month than with a film led and directed by South Asians? That’s right, Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society is finally in theaters and it is the movie to see as soon as you can. The film follows two Pakistani Muslim sisters, Ria Khan, a high school teen who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman, and her older sister Lena, an art school dropout. When Lena ends up betrothed to the only son of a wealthy and high status family, Ria suspects something isn’t right, and takes it upon herself to investigate further and save her sister.

Polite Society is the type of story that is so wildly different that it wasn’t quite clear until now that this is what the South Asian community needed. The film is a comedic riot from beginning to end that manages to combine the aesthetics of a fighting arcade game, the essence of South Asian culture, and a much needed yet vaguely familiar twist to bring the story to a satisfying close. With incredible fight sequences, an entire dance number, and fun storytelling visuals, the film keeps the audience engaged and entertained at every turn.

And sure, at a surface level glance, it looks like a film that centers on marriage, and while that does play a part in the story, it is not the focus by a long shot. What really takes the center stage is the female relationships that are seen throughout the film. Whether it’s Ria and Lena, or even Ria and her best friends, these relationships are shown in a positive and healthy light. There are many instances in film and television where women, especially South Asian women, are made to compete against each other until one prevails over the other.

However, Polite Society blatantly ignores this harmful trope by pushing for a united front amongst our protagonists and supporting characters against a mutual enemy. We see this in particular with Ria and Lena, when the threat of having their ability to choose their life path is very present and very near. Ria is absolutely concerned about her future but that becomes nothing compared to the danger she suspects her sister might be in, and it makes for a wholesome bond that cannot be broken in the end.

But another rare but important discussion that occurs is one regarding the ever so toxic “Mommy and Son” relationships that are all too common within the community and seen as the norm. Polite Society takes this trope to an extremely uncomfortable level but executes it so well that the audience doesn’t even see it coming. The discussion soon turns into one about respect and boundaries, and taking power back into our own hands as women.

Something that we can’t avoid discussing are the spectacular performances across the board, especially from our two leads. Priya Kanara as Ria is an absolute delight to watch as she brings about an engaging presence on the big screen which has people waiting to see what projects she’ll be doing next. Ritu Arya is also phenomenal as Lena as she pulls off such earnest sisterly chemistry with Kansara that you genuinely believe they are sisters. And Nimra Bucha is as menacing as she can be as the expected mother-in-law. Rather than feeding directly into the toxic aunty trope, she creates her own style of terror for her character.

Polite Society is a film that needs to be experienced firsthand to fully understand why people are raving about it and showering it with love. It’s new and refreshing, but also takes overused tropes to a whole new level, and throws in twists we never would have seen coming despite how obvious it was. Every character brings in something unique to the already chaotic plot, and in the end, it comes together so well. If you’re looking for something original and fun, this is the movie for you. Polite Society is without a doubt a story about the bond between sisters but make no mistake, there is something in this movie for everyone. You just have to see it for yourself!

Invincible Iron Man #5 – A New Threat is Revealed!

This one was emotional for me…

While the current run of Invincible Iron Man has been incredibly enjoyable so far, issue 5 took the series to a whole new level! I normally put these reviews up as soon as I finish the issue, I like to have the story fresh in my mind. However, with issue #5, I had to take my time and process a specific story beat before putting my thoughts down in a review. That being said, lets dive in!

This review contains spoilers for Invincible Iron Man #5.

The villain Feilong, revealed as the man pulling the strings in Invincible Iron Man #4

Now that the villain has been revealed as the mutant hating Feilong, Tony rockets off to warn Emma Frost of a possible threat to her people. While Tony is away Feilong makes a discovery, Howard Stark left a special inheritance to Tony that went to the company’s R&D department instead of to Tony himself. As the new CEO, Feilong has access to and ownership of that inheritance.

He is led to a small hanger, inside of which are outdated aircrafts, artwork, and a stack of film reels from Howard Stark addressed to his son. These film reels are messages meant for Tony, explaining important events of his life as well as a discovery that would change the world.

Tony returns to confront Feilong, only to find himself facing off against a prototype Stark Sentinel and the promise that Feilong will complete Howard Stark’s work to shape the world as he sees fit! This is Tony’s fear, his work contorted and perverted by a mad man, The Iron Man being used as a weapon of genocide.

The Stark Sentinel!

The writing is, as always with Gerry Duggan, top notch. As I’ve said in previous reviews, his understanding of who Tony Stark is, as well as, who he was in the past makes for a delightful read for long-time fans of the character. While his writing for Tony Stark makes you want to root for Iron Man, his depiction of Feilong makes the reader despise the villain entirely. In Duggan’s writing of Feilong, there is no question of morality or ambiguity. Feilong is the bad guy, plain and simple and sometimes we just need a character to hate!

Juan Frigeri’s art style continues to lend itself to the frantic and desperate state that Iron Man finds himself in. The Stark Sentinel looks both beautiful and terrifying all at once and the armored action scenes have a real sense of movement and a cinematic style!

Now you may be asking yourself, Derek, why was this story so emotional for you? I have always felt a kinship with Tony Stark as a man who is constantly questioning himself as to whether or not his father would be proud of the man he has become.

You see, my father died when I was 18 years old. Because of that loss, father and son stories always hit me in a more meaningful way and in recent years especially Iron Man, across all media, has delved more into that facet of Tony’s personality and life.

In Iron Man 2 when Tony receives a message from his late father in the form of a prerecorded message, I was reduced to tears. In Captain America: Civil War, as Tony relives his final moments with his parents and takes the opportunity to say a final goodbye, I was a weeping mess!

The idea of getting the chance to hear one final message from a loved one who has passed is a dream that I, and many who have lost people close to them, have had for nearly 20 years. So, when Tony was greeted by Feilong burning the films that Howard left for him before ever getting a chance to see them…

Feilong burning Howard Stark’s messages to Tony

He cemented himself to me as the most ruthless and despicable villain that Iron Man has ever faced off against. This one panel made me pine for Feilong’s demise, not just his defeat. For this one act alone, I despise this character more than any other Iron Man villain I have ever read, and I have read them all. To take away the chance of a child getting one last encounter, even if only through prerecorded messages, from their deceased parent is an unforgivable offense!

I am looking forward to seeing Feilong get what is coming to him. This issue made me have a true emotional response to the story being told. That is the sign of expert storytelling! Thank you to the creative team behind this book for delivering a villain to hate and a protagonist to root for more than ever!

W0RLDTR33 #1 – HORROR AND FEAR IN THE DIGITAL AGE

0
W0RLDTR33 #1 – IMAGE COMICS
Creative Team: JAMES TYNION IV, FERNANDO BLANCO, JORDIE BELLAIRE and ADITYA BIDIKAR

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast by way of Nerd Initiative.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest new series from the mastermind behind the mega hit series “Something Is Killing The Children.” Considering who else is along for the horror tale being told, it completely justifies the hype surrounding this book. W0RLDTR33 #1 by JAMES TYNION IV, FERNANDO BLANCO, JORDIE BELLAIRE and ADITYA BIDIKAR from Image Comics embarks a journey into the darkest portion of the internet known as the Undernet and the results are terrifying.

Before we get started with the review, this book has some extreme violent imagery and themes throughout that might be upsetting to some. Reader discretion is strongly advised before jumping into this issue.

That said, if you’re still in for the review, let’s see what all the hype is about, shall we?

*** POSSBILE SPOILER WARNING ***

An ominous quote welcomes readers to this series: “Let me Tell You How Much I’ve Come To Hate You Since I Began To Live” – Harlen Ellison “I Have No Mouth and I need To scream (2024).”

A naked woman opens her laptop after committing a murder in what appears to be a hotel room. Signing in with the username of “PH34R”, She accesses the Undernet. With images of violent acts appear all across the screen, she focuses in on one with almost 30,000 views! Readers watch in horror as a young man knocks on a random house and flashes his cell phone in front of an unsuspecting victim, making them disoriented before slitting the gentleman’s throat. The killer is talking to the watching audience and going through his process of murder. The killer does the same thing to the woman in the kitchen of the house before going into the bathroom. The killer is a fifteen-year-old named Gibson Lane with a video camera strapped to his head. On his stream, he brags about killing forty people, much to the delight of “PH34R” watching.

From here, the story shifts to a man named Ellison and his girlfriend Fausta driving by a mountain side in route to Pittsburgh. Ellison is talking about how he found his brother talking about what he saw on the dark web and it was some truly disturbing images. Fausta tries calming his nerves but with little success. While driving, she searches his brother’s social media to calm his nerves more but sees something that chills her to the bone instead. They pull the car over and see that Ellison’s fears were correct that something was terribly wrong.

The story shifts to a man named Gabriel watching on the news about Gibson’s killing spree (now at sixty plus). He stares into a picture on the wall, which triggers a flashback. During this moment, readers see a young Gabriel along with other teenagers trying to stop something from leaving the computer servers they are on. The stakes feel huge for, as one person points out, “we’re just kids”.

The story shifts back to the present as Gabriel calls Liam (presumed to be the boy with the “kids” quote from the flashback. The conversation is uncomfortable, but the message is clear: the undernet has to be stopped from spreading. Gabriel mentions a possible solution is back active: a message board known as W0rldtr33. Gabriel summons Liam and the others from the flashback to meet in Pittsburgh to take this challenge head on.

At this stage, Ellison arrives at the police station to see his brother. However, he’s not alone in arriving at the station. Who else appears wanting to see Gibson? Readers see a final act that no one can predict which way it goes. The final image caps off a brutal and violently horrific saga that has just only begun.

BREAKDOWN: Tynion wastes no time in setting things in motions with this story. Each major player (thus far) gets their fair share of panel time to start their stories but all pale in comparison to the heinous actions of Gibson. Tynion writes him as a delusional psychopath throughout his murder spree. Ellison comes across as a caring brother, lost at what to do with the situation at hand (and rightfully so). “PH34R” and Gabriel have only begun to make an impact but, at first read, they have a destined collision course waiting in the wings. The story itself is extremely upsetting as the Undernet has only shown a fraction of what its capable of. It is pure horror at a terrifying high level. As with most of his writing, no one is better at the slow burn build than Tynion. With only one issue down, readers sense the terror behind what is about to come and will be locked in for the long haul to see where this story is heading.

Blanco and Bellaire spare no expense in visualizing the insanity unfolding within these pages. The murder spree is horrific and unapologetic. The set-up of 12 or 9 panel pages gave those disturbing moments a more direct impact when reading. Gibson looking in the bathroom mirror after killing the couple was a blunt depiction into his madness. His mannerisms will be unsettling to some readers. It’s matched on impacting the readers with Fausta’s reaction to finding his social media videos. Once her tears start, readers will connect with her reaction to what she just saw. “PH34R” stands out (not because she is nude the majority of time) from her slight grin seeing the lunacy transpire. The final act caps off the brutal tale perfectly with a final parting image showing the fallout response to what has just unraveled before he audience.

FINAL POINT: The darkest secret of the internet steps into the spotlight in the pages of Image Comic’s latest series. Tynion, Blanco and the team present an absolutely frightening tale of horror in disturbing fashion. Solid storytelling equaled out with alarming imagery gives this story a distinct feel as it progresses to the next chapter. Makes sure to keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day.

The Many Crossovers Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Major Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Crossover Announcement

Recently, IDW Publishing announced that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will have a crossover, 4-issue limited series with a group of characters from one of Dark Horse Comics’ most popular comic book series, Stranger Things.

Needless to say, there are a lot of people excited about this crossover event. However, this is hardly the first time that the heroes in a half-shell crossed over to another property in a comic book series.

Batman

Arguably the most popular crossover of this entire list, the crossover of Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was first published in 2015. Since then, there have been a total of 3 crossover events and an animated movie inspired by the first volume.

New York City’s Heroes in a Half Shell and Gotham’s Caped Crusader join forces against their greatest enemies—Krang, the Shredder, The Joker, and more— in a trio of tales that mash up the dimensions of the Turtles and Batman… putting all of reality in jeopardy!

Batman Adventures

No, this is not a misprint. No, it’s not deja vu. No, this is not the same one as earlier. This series is a crossover between the two animated shows (whereas the previous section is a crossover of the comic book characters).

The animated worlds of the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Nickelodeon cartoon and Batman: The Animated Series collide in this outstanding mini-series featuring fan-favorite characters from both universes! Villains start to mysteriously escape Arkham and Batman seeks to track them down, but he discovers that they have left Gotham completely… and gone to the New York City of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Creed

Probably one of the lesser-known crossovers, the four turtle brothers team up with a character named Creed from Lightning Comics. This issue was labeled as #1, and there’s only been one issue of this crossover.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

This crossover was established in 2019 with BOOM! Studios. The first volume consisted of 5 issues and (at the time of this article) the second volume of this crossover event is about to release its fifth and final issue of the run.

The Power Rangers arrive in New York City to find their missing teammate Tommy Oliver, AKA The Mighty Morphin Green Ranger, but soon discover he’s joined forces with the villainous Shredder and the Foot Clan! But the Rangers must also deal with another unexpected (fr)enemy – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Can these heroes find a way to work together to defeat the bad guys and save the world from total destruction?!
* Written by Ryan Parrott (Power Rangers: Necessary Evil) and illustrated by Simone di Meo (Power Rangers: Beyond The Grid), the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fight – and maybe team up with – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the first time ever.

Savage Dragon

Another crossover that seems odd and not as well known, the Turtles teamed up with Savage Dragon back in the 1990s. This comic was published under Mirage Studios, the home of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at that time.

Ghostbusters

Another big pop culture crossover, the turtles teamed up with the Ghostbusters not once, but twice.

They crossed the streams! Turtles and scientists, working together… and they’re back for more! The two pop-culture phenomena join forces again in this sequel to the smash hit to fight a threat more extreme than anything either of them has ever faced.

An enemy from Master Splinter’s past is back and hungry for revenge. To get it, he’ll summon the most dangerous foe that the Turtles have ever encountered-the Collectors, shape-shifting demons that can pass through dimensions at will and cannot be stopped once they have been summoned to harvest a soul. To save themselves from the clutches of the Collectors, the Turtles team up with the Ghostbusters, the only people who have ever faced them and lived to tell the tale, in a battle that turns into a chase across dimensions both incredible and terrifying.

Usagi Yojimbo

Whereas Batman or Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are probably the most popular crossovers in the world of pop culture, the Turtles’ crossover with Usagi was very popular with comics fans. This one-issue, 32-page series event was released in 2017 but is now currently in a second run.

The TMNT are teleported to a world of talking animals-the world of Usagi Yojimbo! When the samarai rabbit embarks on a quest to save Japan and the deadly Jei blocks his path, a Turtle team-up may be the only chance for survival!

The X-Files

Although definitely not one of the weirdest crossovers, this one does seem to be “out there” (sorry, I had to!). But given the fact that both the Ninja Turtles and The X-Files were huge in the 90s, a sci-fi crossover actually made sense. This was a one-issue story that was released in 2014.

The Turtles are doing their best to avoid trouble in Northampton. Unfortunately, trouble finds them in the form of the Lone Gunmen! The fate of the world depends on the Gunmen getting the reclusive Turtles’ help. Add in an undead menace and things are going to get downright dangerous!

Celebrating National Superhero Day

If you know anything about the Nerd Initiative community, it’s that we love characters, especially superheroes. From anime to comic books, movies, and video games, our list of heroes goes far and wide. Since today, April 28th, is National Superhero Day, we thought we would share some of our favorite superheroes with you.

Pooja Chand – Captain Marvel

While I’d always heard about Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel, I’d never had the opportunity to read the comics and based much of my understanding of her character on what I’d read on the internet. So naturally, my official introduction to her character was through her very own film, Captain Marvel which stars Brie Larson as the one and only Carol.

Her arrogance is often criticized but I mean, look at what she can do! It’s also often mistaken for pure confidence and the fact that she has the capability to believe in herself and persevere, regardless of the circumstances. Carol wants to be who she is and feel what she feels, and ultimately she finds a way to utilize her emotions for good. As someone who experiences emotions very strongly, I can’t help but love her. Also, she is part of the reason Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan exists, so that’s a major plus!

Janelle Holland – Aquaman

Aquaman, the king under the sea. This character has resonated with me since I began reading comics. Not only is this character so amazing with his powers and abilities, he really loves his family. Aquaman brings two worlds together, the surface world and the sea. I always thought he was heroic in the way that he just loves his people and is proud to be an Atlantean. I’ve always liked Greek Mythology and anything ocean related. So I was not surprised when I fell in love with Aquaman comics, so quickly. He can use the trident and swim extremely fast under the water. He is a reckoning force and an outstanding addition to the Justice League. The Geoff Johns series on Aquaman is my favorite. Many people do not want to give him credit or call him corny. I always admired how he cared for the sea creatures and treated them like people. He has a connection to the water, that cannot be broken. I think Aquaman will always be in my heart because the focus is mainly on his family and his buddies from the Justice League. Please check out some Aquaman comics, at your local comic shop!

Mickey Smith – Captain America

My favorite superhero is none other than the star-spangled kid from Brooklyn himself, Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America! Ever since Cap showed up in 1941 punching Hitler on the cover of his self-titled comic book by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Steve Rogers has been fighting for freedom and liberty for all people, no matter who they are or where they’re from! Even though the world may change around him, such as advancing technology and the red tape of complicated politics, Cap remains the touchstone of what it means to be a hero. It may at times seem like Steve is holding on to the past, but what he is really doing is just holding on to the ideals of what it means to be a good person, always to do the right and
honorable thing.

Captain America has seen the country he loves change in many ways, good and bad, but is always hopeful that he can bring people back from the worst places, and protect innocent people from those that won’t listen to reason. Cap doesn’t judge people or weigh and measure lives against others. Cap represents many of the values I hold dear: Integrity, resilience, and empathy. I’ll always strive to honor the legacy of Steve Rogers aka Captain
America and that’s why Captain America is my favorite superhero!

Ken Maney – Spider-Man

The concept of a superhero is hard to define. It has evolved over time to the point it can be blurred. Ever since the first documented superhero debuted back in 1936 with Lee Falk’s Phantom, fans have been enamored with the idea of a costumed individual fighting the forces of evil in the name of good. Even back then, it didn’t take long to start the evolution when a man from Krypton crashed into the hearts of pop culture fans with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman in the pages of Action Comics in 1938. It is literally that moment the world became aware of superheroes and never looked back.

Throughout the history of comics, heroes have come in many forms with varying motivations. The vengeance-fueled Batman, the patriotic Captain America, and the Amazonian warrior Wonder Woman are all notable names. The definition has evolved with the dawn of the anti-hero with characters like Wolverine, Punisher, Spawn, and Ghost Rider. Even with those heroes in the mix, there is one (to me personally) that stands out above and beyond: the Amazing Spider-Man.

Superman might be the definition (as stated in a previous article) but when it comes down to it, Spider-Man surpasses it because of what he has to work with. Peter Parker is flawed as a character and outmatched by many opponents. He’s not bulletproof. He can’t fly. He can’t move things with his mind. Yet, time and time again, Peter swings into action giving it all no matter what the cost. He connects with fans for this factor. Superman inspires hope, Spidey inspires action. He makes you think YOU can be a hero because he is an everyday person with gifts and literally lives the motto: “With Great Power comes Great Responsibility.”

But at the end of the day, it is what the character does with their abilities and gifts that defines a superhero. Celebrate the ideals and concepts cause the world can always use a superhero.

Sean Winningham – Daredevil

My love for superheroes and their stories was rooted in two events: The 1980s iconic movie characters of Christopher Reeve’s Superman and Michael Keaton’s Batman, and my uncle who introduced me to comics. When I was about 9, I was going through his comic book collection and came across the character Daredevil, I asked my uncle who this person was. After he shared details about the character, The Man Without Fear became an instant favorite of mine.

As someone who was raised Catholic and suffered from hearing loss since birth, I saw myself in Daredevil in many ways. Matt Murdock was also a Catholic who, at an early age, became blind due to an accident during his heroic action in saving an old man from getting hit by a truck. So to see so many similarities between us, I was always inspired by how his disability never held him back from being his best and doing what was right (of course, having enhanced senses definitely helps!). I always love seeing Daredevil in action. Whether it’s in a comic book or on screen, I am excited to see that this amazing character is getting more and more popular every year.

Nerdtooine – Nightwing

Who is my favorite hero? Well, that is not a simple answer, the majority of my favorite characters are the brutal and tragic anti-hero archetypes like The Punisher, Moon Knight, or Wolverine. However, when I think about who my favorite true blue hero is there can only be one answer, Dick Grayson, Nightwing. I feel at their core heroes are meant to inspire us to be better versions of ourselves and for me that is Nightwing. Dick has gone through so many traumatic events in his life, including watching his own parent get murdered, yet still has a joyful hopeful optimism.

He broke free of his sidekick persona and became one of the most iconic heroes in all of comics and would go on to lead his own legendary team the Teen Titans. Nightwing takes the best aspects of Batman, his fighting ability and next-level intelligence, but trades the serious, sometimes one-note Dark Knight with sharp-witted banter similar to Spider-Man. No matter how dark or terrible the world around Nightwing might be, he remains positive and still able to deliver a sick “drop the mic” one-liner, and that is what makes him my favorite.

Derek Hoskins – Iron Man

The quality of a hero is often judged by the quality of their villains. With Iron Man, his greatest enemy is not some super-powered, dastardly rogue, but Tony Stark himself. Tony is a brilliant, but deeply flawed human being who does everything in his power to make the world a better place. He does this to atone for past sins. However, he is defined by his failure. What makes him a hero worth rooting for is the fact that, no matter how many times he fails, he keeps moving forward.

Tony has no superpowers outside of a genius-level intellect and Iron Man was born out of his own determination and brilliance. Iron Man is a man amongst gods, and I will always go to bat for the human being who went from a morally bankrupt weapons developer to one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – Fans Sound Off on ‘Brutal’ Ending

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had its red carpet premier Thursday night in Hollywood and fans are already taking to social media to share their thoughts.

Director James Gunn posted an emotional tweet about saying goodbye to the franchise he helped bring to the MCU.

“Well, we’re here. Tonight is the LA Premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 3. I’m nervous, of course, but mostly excited for all of us, the cast & crew & our friends & families, to sit together in a dark theater & experience the movie together. This is the sweetest part of filmmaking: one last look at our creation, one brief moment of being present to the long & winding journey it took us to get here, before turning it over to all of you, the world at large. Thank you to all of you who helped us to get here. You know who you are. My love for you runs deep. #GotGVol3#WeAreGroot,” he tweeted.

Here’s what fans had to say after the first screening. Safe to say, they seem to love it!

But there will be tears nonetheless!

Three Tips For Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day 2023

Every year, Free Comic Book Day falls on the first Saturday of May (with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). This is an event that many call the “Black Friday” event for all local comic shops as this is the day of the year when they get a lot of customer traffic coming into their stores.

This year, Free Comic Book Day will take place on Saturday, May 6th.

What Is Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day is an event where many publishers in the comic book industry (such as Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Boom! Studios, IDW Publishing, and more) creates a special issue(s) for local comic shops to offer to customers for free. Starting locally in 2002, the event has since grown to be a nationwide event (and even internationally!). Comic shops do a lot to celebrate this day, ranging from offering special deals and discounts to encouraging and inviting cosplayers to attend, and even hosting comics creators in their stores (this is something that my local comic shop, Comic Book University, has been doing for years!).

Here is a YouTube video below that explains more about what the day is about.

So if this is your first time attending Free Comic Book Day, or you just want a refresher on the event, or if you simply want to share this with someone you know, here are three tips for you about Free Comic Book Day. (Video AND text below)

https://www.tiktok.com/@captionedlife/video/7226069182062808362?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7182257710396655146

Tip #1: There Are SO MANY Free Comics This Year! (And There Is Something For Everyone)

This year, Free Comic Book Day will have almost 50 unique titles that you can pick up (yes, for free!) at your local comic shop. They include the most popular characters such as Batman, Superman, Avengers, Spider-Man, and so on. They’ll also include popular properties such as Dog Man, Nightmare Before Christmas, Animal Crossing, Star Wars, Star Trek.. the list goes on. No matter what your interests are, there is a comic book for everyone! Check out the complete list of comics that are part of Free Comic Book Day, courtesy of League of Comic Geeks.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As mentioned earlier, one of the reasons Free Comic Book Day exists is to help support local comic shops. So if you visit your shop to pick up a free comic, please consider purchasing something from their store. Although the comic is free to you, store owners had to pay to get those free issues. So please support them by purchasing something from their store. (Special thank you to Johnny Lovely for pointing that out on my IG Reel of this video)

Tip #2: The Colored Labels MEANS Something!

As you are picking up your free comics at your local comic ship, you’ll notice that each issue will have the phrase “Free Comic Book Day” at the top of it on top of a green, blue, or red bar. These are not there just to make the text look good, but to communicate to you the target audience for that issue (think of it as a rating system for comics). Here’s the breakdown of each color and its rating:

  • Green – appropriate for all ages
  • Blue – appropriate for teenagers and older
  • Red – appropriate for mature audiences (18 or older)

So if you take your young ones with you to Free Comic Book Day, make sure they are selecting comics that are appropriate for them by using the color label system on the issue.

Tip #3: Find A Participating Comic Shop (Or Library Or Bookstore) Near You!

If you’ve never been to a comic shop in your area or don’t know where the closest one is to you, Free Comic Book Day has you covered. They have a website where you can type in your zip code and it will provide a list of local comic shops in your area. Keep in mind that not all comic shops will participate in the event, so make sure to call ahead of time and confirm that they will be giving out free comics on Free Comic Book Day.

Also, local comic shops are not the only places that may be celebrating Free Comic Book Day. Many bookstores, libraries, and community centers are known for hosting a Free Comic Book Day event, so reach out to one near you to see if they are participating in the event this year.

DEEP CUTS #1Image Comics via Black Market Narrative

Creative Team: KYLE HIGGINS & JOE CLARK (RADIANT BLACK), Danilo Beyruth, Igor Monti and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast via Nerd Initiative!

Time To Get Started

The story kicks off in the era of New Orleans in 1917. A young man with a case in hand named Charles Stewart walks through the streets, ignoring the people around. Stewart is focused on the musical notes filling the air. He is “looking” for a certain sound and is determined to find it through the busy city. After some stops, the young man finds what or should we say who he’s looking for.

Making a run for the door, Stewart runs into the bouncer of the club and is turned away for his age. Determined to play in the show, Stewart pulls out his clarinet and starts playing through an opened window. This causes the bouncer to approach Stewart to stop him. Before he can make a move, a man peeks his head outside and invites Stewart in. That man is none other than Jack Cartier, the charismatic star of the show inside.

Star Struck

Cartier convinces the bouncer to let Stewart stay. Cartier recognizes Stewart from trying to crash other shows. It is revealed that Stewart wants to join Cartier’s band. Cartier is impressed by the effort of the young man but doesn’t have him join in the show that night. Instead, Stewart is offered to join the band for a parade the next day.

Excited beyond belief, Stewart leaves with his dreams in sight. Returning home, he greets his grandmother about his new job. She tries to pass on a warning of “Be careful around musicians. They will break your heart.” It reflects a similar message she gave Charles’ mother.

The next day, Charles arrives for the show but finds out it’s not what he was thinking. Cartier greets him with the “honor” of holding his case while they walk in the parade, claiming there isn’t a current spot but if something happens, Charles is in. The parade leads to another opportunity with Cartier, one where Charles will actually get to play his instrument.

What’s Next For Charles?

Where is this job based? Readers find out quickly that the entry level Charles is starting at might not be ideal to his grandmother’s liking. The job leads to a whole new world that Charles may or may not be ready for. All he has to guide him is a love for music and makes an unlikely friend in a woman named “Dixie” who works at the establishment.

With all these outside influences, what does the future hold for young Charles? Readers see a journey into self-discovery as Charles begins to grow in his voice and playing which leads into many surprise directions. The ending is fitting for a first issue that has only begun to show what it’s all about.

Story Review

Higgins and Clark start this series off on a very strong note. Seeing the hopefulness pour out of Charles while he is chasing his dream is a theme that drives this first issue. His willingness to be a part of the band moves him into crossing paths with a variety of characters and morals. The relationships that form with the young player along the way each have a significant impact on his path.

Cartier comes across as a charming but suspicious musician that reflects a side of the world Charles wants to enter. Due to his eagerness to play, Charles looks past what Cartier is doing but it plays into his eventual growth in this story. Dixie makes a great counter to Cartier as her intentions come across as genuine.

The pacing of the tale allows moments to build along with seeing the overall effect music has on Charles. It is easy for readers to connect with what Charles is aspiring for. Once the closing moments begin, there are payoffs for the build that tie all the sub-stories together. It is a solid beginning to introducing readers to the power of jazz and music as a whole.

Artwork Overview

The art of Beyruth and Monti visualize the hypnotic power of music that engulfs Charles. His search for Cartier’s band comes across almost trance-like as he dodges the world around him until he finds the source. The depiction later in the book when Charles is paying at the new job stands out for much of the same reason.

The panels’ coloring of notes and playing comes across as impactful to the listeners in attendance. The expressions of Cartier add another dynamic to the story. He always comes across smiling with a devilish smirk. This plays into many of his actions with all the characters (not just Charles). A perfect example of this is with Mother Martha. The way that Cartier switches directions with his banter plays right into his influence on Charles and the overall story. The closing brings everything together and sets the tempo for more adventures to come.

Final Point

Higgins, Clark, Beyruth and the team invite readers on a compelling introduction to one of music’s most famous genres. Readers won’t be able to deny seeing how one young man’s ambition leads him on a journey of self-discovery through the mesmerizing appeal of jazz. Sharp writing and art fill the pages with bringing the story of Charles Stewart front and center to comic readers. You definitely don’t want to miss this on New Comic Book day.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING***

What Is ‘Pocus Hocus’?

In case you are not familiar, Pocus Hocus centers around a man who sells his soul to a demon to become the world’s greatest magician. Pocus’s reasons for doing this? He wants to impress his father and get his paternal approval. Unfortunately for him, Pocus’s father passes away before seeing him display his powers.

Years later, the demon reappeared looking for Pocus to help him get out of a mess. Failure to do so meant both the demon and Pocus would die. Luckily, there’s one person in Pocus’s life that might be able to save him: his assistant Emily. Together, they embark on a journey into Hell where more secrets are uncovered and Pocus’ life as he knows it has changed forever.

Issue #5

This issue kicks off with Pocus, Hugo the Demon, HORUS the rabbit (FTW!) and Emily being invited into the realm controlled by Queen Lilith. Persius walks in to break the news that the group is here, but Lilith knows this already since she invited them in. Persius is killed instantly for questioning the queen. Lilith allows Victoria to take out “team Pocus” with the exception of Emily, who she has big plans for.

Meanwhile, Pocus is drowning his sorrows in front of a small crowd. After making “friends” with the patrons, Pocus senses everything isn’t alright. There are voices lurking which tip him off. While trying to leave, it is revealed there is a trap set to kill him. The bartender transforms into a huge spider-like creature. Pocus makes a run for the door and is greeted by his fellow travelers. With a united front led by HORUS, Pocus and the team handle the monster. However, there’s no time to celebrate as a mysterious figure by the name of Samuel S. Ramsuel arrives on the scene.

What is his intent? Why does he have a vested interest in Pocus’s journey? More importantly, what is the history between him and HORUS?! Readers jump along for the ride as Pocus faces a grave challenge that he might not be fully capable of handling. The final page drops a huge exclamation point on the latest chapter that will have fans looking for when the next Kickstarter campaign begins!

Story Review

Radford and Dunford keep readers guessing with a touch more serious issue that they have seen previously. The spotlight on Lilith gives this chapter a different feel as she teases at her master plan for Pocus and co. without having a great deal of panel time featured. That said, there’s no shortage of the classic humor that has made this series stand out.

The initial encounter with the spider creature plays out with Pocus’ obliviousness to what is happening with quips sprinkled throughout. Even when the creature gets ready to strike, Emily counters with a monologue only to be countered with a bored spider asking for things to get going again. Another standout moment is when Ramseul makes his debut. The conversation is light hearted with solid laugh out loud moments mixed in.

© 2023 Top Hat Studios & Source Point Press

Horus’s reputation was already legendary but hearing Ramseul talk about it raised its stock. From here, the story shifts back into a more serious-esque tone, ramping up on the drama before closing strong with a big final page.

Artwork Overview

Balondo welcomes readers into this corner of darkness with some wild imagery. The creatures featured in this series jump out from the moment they hit a panel. The spider’s debut was strong in its initial debut only to be complemented by a full panel showcase. We are given an excellent two-page spread to show the “team” in action. The mannerisms of the team when first talking with Ramseul are a noteworthy moment.

The way Balondo sets up the back and forth with Horus, Hugo and Ramseul gives a much-needed detour from the more direct tone of the book. The action sequences play off well in the final chapter to ramp up what is unfolding. A superb final page to finalize events while building up anticipation for the next issue.

Final Point

The next phase of the world’s favorite soul selling magician sets course with another excellent read. Dunford, Radford, Balondo, Smith, & Lentz mix up the light hearted dialogue with a more direct theme with the writing & outstanding art. The series sets a new course and readers will be excited to get this in their hands (along with Grandma Chainsaw #2). Make sure you don’t miss both!
