Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast via Nerd Initiative.

For this entry, we’re following the clues surrounding the biggest mystery in comics: WHO IS NO ONE? The Image Comics series via Black Market Narrative has been an absolute smash hit with readers as both #1 and #2 have gone into 2nd and 3rd printings.

The way that this series has branched outside traditional comics promotion is incredible with its companion podcast and viral shorts. “No/One” feels more like an event rather than a series. Note, this is only after two issues of the series. To cause that strong of a reaction after only two issues is a testament to the amazing work being done with this series.

NO/ONE #3 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou dives back into the story after last issue’s shocking ending. All bets are off where the fallout goes from here, but let’s not wait any longer. Shall we resume the mystery of “Who Is No One”?

Quick Recap

Louis Capel. Michael Kern. Coach Nathan Tate. All dead with a possible common thread connecting them. That common denominator is the mysterious vigilante known as “No/One”. However, it is more complicated than it seems. “Richard Roe” aka “the accountability Killer” or No/One is publicly known as Aaron Kern.

Kern has been in Allegheny County Jail after being caught and confessing to being the killer. So if he’s behind bars, who is the copycat attacking under the mask? This is on top of Assistant Chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) being attacked and saved by No/One?!

No/One also has caught the eyes of Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige who are covering the case via podcast. Detectives Singh and Harper are on the case, trying to make sense of it all. The City of Pittsburgh is on edge.

Senator Noah Tate (who survived a No/One attack) arrives and makes a public plea to bring swift legal change to protect the people from No/One. Tate looks to Kern for support and is answered with a public resignation instead.

The Mystery Continues

This issue opens with Police Sergeant Vince Harmon sitting with Ben Kern setting up an exit interview to tie up loose ends. This is interrupted by Lieutenant McGarrity, who barges in with questions of his own for Kern. The conversation is heated as the frustration of the case is boiling over. Once cooler heads prevail, the case file is given to Kern for one last attempt to find a clue to solve the case.

Meanwhile, Julia and Teddy are discussing Aaron Kern’s timeline when she receives a call from her mother, FOC News host Alanna Page, who is going on-air to talk about the case. When declined, Alanna’s attention shifts to another case. That case involves a man by the name of Kenneth Chbosky. Shortly after the show, Chbosky reaches out to Julia for an interview due to her No/One coverage.

How do things fare with another profile case? How does this fit in with the No/One case? Readers witness what transpires and what dangers follow. With the spotlight burning hotter on all the major players, the case shifts into new directions. With so many vested parties searching for answers, there is no shortage of enjoyment for readers to have with this series.

Story Review

Higgins and Buccellato focus heavy on the tension the No/One case is having on the citizens of Pittsburgh. Right from the opening segment, they set the tone of anger and bitterness directed at Ben Kern. It’s countered with his own tormented feelings with how his family is attached to the case.

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

The story with Julia presents an interesting dynamic with her mother that has only begun to scratch the surface. It is overshadowed by the events involving her and Chbosky, which the writing team shows how dangerous her line of work can be. The fallout changes some preconceived notions surrounding her investigation and raises more questions heading further into the mystery.

Even with the focus being on Julia for the majority of this issue, the main supporting characters get enough panel time to advance their parts. The conclusion brings one character full circle as anyone involved with this case simply just can’t walk away from it.

Artwork Overview

First off, how fantastic is the main cover by Borges and Mark Englert! It’s subtle but makes a statement. Heading into the issue, the emotional outbursts pour out of the panels when it involves Ben Kern and Lieutenant McGarrity, readers can easily connect the pent-up frustration that explodes when Kern tries answering the questioning.

Julia and Chbosky’s portion of the story comes off brooding and tense, which pairs perfectly with the blunt writing of Chbosky’s character. The fallout is swift and impactful as no panel goes wasted in redefining Julia’s opinions concerning the story she is diving into. There’s a great near fill page panel that readers can fully see the change unfolding surrounding Julia’s case.

Panel structure is also giving this series a more powerful feel to how No/One’s actions have grabbed the city’s attention. There’s a certain energy that this book brings that gets amplified by the amazing art.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The Massive-Verse’s biggest mystery heads into uncharted territory with its latest entry. Shifting the focus away from the main case to highlight a smaller one is a risky gamble, but Higgins, Buccellato, Borges, and the team tie it all together with compelling writing and phenomenal art. The mystery has only just begun but there is a reason why this series gets all the praise it does: It’s simply THAT Good! Don’t miss this series and the companion podcast when it drops!

Arcade Kings #1 – Get Your Quarters Ready!

Arcade Kings #1 – Image Comics

Creative Team: Dylan Burnett (Cosmic Ghost Rider), Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast via Nerd Initiative!

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that you don’t want to pass up on for New Comic Book Day! With the new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the talk of pop culture fans this week, it is very ironic (and simultaneously poetic) that the world of video games plays a part into this saga shrouded in mystery.

Arcade Kings #1 by DYLAN BURNETT (Cosmic Ghost Rider), Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini welcomes readers to Infinity City and an enigmatic figure starting his own heroic quest. Let’s not delay and “press start” to this review already. Ready for the first level?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Level 1

The story begins in Infinity City. A prize fight is happening in front of a capacity crowd. In one corner, a fighter named “Ziegler”. In the other is world champion Victor McMax! The action is flying in the ring, but looking from the outside are two young boys with very different personalities. One is Joe, who wants to follow in the champ’s footsteps. The other is his younger brother Ken, who seems disinterested in the action in the ring. Once the final bell hits, McMax retains his title via KO.

The story jumps to a short time later and McMax announces his retirement under mysterious circumstances.

A Little Later

From here, readers are taken to Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. At the Round House Arcade, there is a commotion as someone was just defeated in a game. Sitting at the game is a figure wearing a unique helmet asking for who’s next. The figure is Joe.

When a new competitor steps up, readers are taken on a flashback to three weeks prior where Rikio, the nephew of the arcade owner, was assaulted by some punks. He’s saved by Joe, who fends them off. An offer is made following that Rikio can’t say no to: Joe stays at the arcade “to lay low” and in return, he will replace the broken joystick Rikio had and be the protector of the arcade. In three weeks, the deal seems to be paying off for both.

That is until a stranger named Molly walks in to challenge Joe. This is no ordinary player as Molly walks in with her own robot. Molly also says something that triggers a flashback to Joe’s past.

Now What?

What gets said to force an impulsive action? How does Joe fare to this unlikely challenge? Readers sit ringside as Joe has his biggest challenge to date. The fallout sets the tale into a new direction with a final act that keeps readers guessing what will happen next as the story levels up.

Story Review

Burnett is on double duty for this series and it’s easy to see he’s crafting something special within these pages. From the opening bell, the pace sets a high rhythm, giving readers just enough information about the young boys before jumping ahead to where Joe’s journey takes shape. His initial start is cryptic as not much is tipped off concerning why he’s trying to stay out of the spotlight. This changes dramatically when Molly hits the scene and peels back a layer of his past. The moment is brief but makes a big impact in the story.

Joe’s drive for his cause is memorable as he thrusts himself into fighting when needed while running under the radar of his past. The closing moments are bittersweet as things shift gears but like every great mystery, not everything is revealed at the first chance. The closing moments bring up speculation of what has transpired over the years, but this is nothing but win for the reader.

Artwork Overview

The artwork is high energy. The coloring of Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) makes the sights of Infinity City pop off the panels. It reflects the exhilarating pace of the fighting mixed with the overall story. This is illustrated perfectly with the 2 page spread in the beginning of the issue.

Readers will feel the excitement in the crowd with the action in the match. This carries through each fight and it delivers without fault. Burnett’s art plays into the emotional rush of the action. There are great non-action sequences with a final “walk-off” into the sunset balanced out with a strong closing visual to take readers into the next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

Arcade Kings #1 hits a nice 1-2 combo of action and drama that the readers won’t need to worry about the judges scoring. Burnett and his team drop an emotionally charged tale clouded in secrets and combat with solid writing and dynamic art that doesn’t need a cheat code. Make sure you level up your collection on NCBD with this issue.

Invincible Iron Man #6 – A Blast From the Past!

Tony Stark takes a trip down memory lane…

The Story:

The latest issue of The Invincible Iron Man takes a break from the main storyline to dive into an untold tale from Tony’s time with the West Coast Avengers. Iron Man faces off against a mind controlled Wonder Man, Hawkeye, Tigra, and Mockingbird during a test of the government’s latest mind control weapon. Tony is then tasked with delivering a device to block psionic attacks to Nick Fury and of course, things do not go as planned.

Iron Man spars with the West Coast Avengers

The Writing:

As always, Gerry Duggan’s work is stellar. In an issue that could be seen as “filler,” I was engaged and never felt like I was wanting to return to the “main storyline.” Also, he continues to impress with his ability to connect with long time readers with phrases like “I tend to remember stories not by which year they happened in, but by which armor I was wearing at the time.” That’s brilliant, that is how Iron Man fans remember Iron Man stories!

The Artwork:

We have a guest artist on issue #6, Andrea Di Vito. Just as with the rest of the series, the art is stunning. Sometimes I have a hard time when a book switches artists in the middle of a run but this artwork flowed perfectly and didn’t take me out of the story for a second! Not to mention, Di Vito draws a mean Silver Centurion armor, which is not one of my favorites but looked great in this issue!

Final Thoughts:

Overall, there is not a lot to say about this issue, it was a quick and enjoyable read. It feels like a middle chapter that is setting up things to come. I have no doubt that this was not a throw away story. This is simply a new thread that will be woven into the tapestry of Gerry Duggan’s overall story. Solid art, great writing, and a new story set during a popular time in Marvel Comics make this win and an easy recommendation. Go check out this series, you won’t regret it.

Queen Charlotte: When Love Comes In Many Forms

0

On May 4, fans of the critically acclaimed series, Bridgerton, rushed to Netflix to binge the newest spin-off series from Shonda Rhimes herself, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. As we all collectively wait for the third season of Bridgerton, this series allows a young Queen Charlotte to take the center stage as we see her enter a tumultuous marriage with King George III, one that tests both their faith, loyalty, and love toward one another. The series also gives us a look into the events that follow Bridgerton’s second season, focusing primarily on Queen Charlotte, Lady Agatha Danbury, and Viscountess Violet Bridgerton.

With love being the primary focus of the Bridgerton stories, let’s take a look into the different stories of love and connections that take place throughout the Queen Charlotte series. There will be spoilers ahead so if you have not watched all six episodes, it is recommended you come back when you have watched them all or read at your own risk and discretion.

Queen Charlotte and King George III

If Daphne and Simon were the symbol of a fast-paced, burning hot romance, while Kate and Anthony are the iconic epitome of a slow burn love story, then the tale of Charlotte and George is the perfect balance between the two. The beginning of their relationship makes it clear that their marriage was arranged for them as a way to benefit both sides of the family. Neither would have picked one or the other necessarily, especially given their stubborn, hard-headed personalities that we see throughout the series.

Charlotte is witty and quick with her words, does not enjoy her every move being watched and followed, and would rather pick her own oranges if she could have her way. Meanwhile, George is just George, Farmer George, if you will. He would much rather spend his time tending to the gardens and looking at the night sky to keep himself occupied. From episode one, there is a spark as Charlotte is thwarted from her attempts to jump over the palace walls before their wedding and is stopped by the very king she is arranged to marry. But shortly after, there is distance, there is miscommunication, and there is no desire from George to be with her on their wedding night. So how does love even grow from there?

It is ultimately through Charlotte’s persistence and passive aggression toward George that pushes their relationship to be one of unconditional devotion and loyalty. As we discover that George suffers from manic episodes and severe mental health issues, Charlotte is determined to fight with him, fight for him. As she demands that George do the same when he does not believe his feelings could be equally reciprocated due to his condition, she questions him while bearing his first child, “Between the heavens and the earth, I will tell you where you are. Do you love me?”

It is in this very scene and with George’s response that their affections toward each other are rooted in a type of love that is intended to withstand any and all hardships. The attention isn’t on the butterflies of courtship, the physical attractions, or the intense moments of falling in love. Instead, Charlotte and George’s story is ultimately about fighting for each other and remaining at each other’s side through even the worst of times. It ultimately boils down to making the choice to love, and making sacrifices for one another. It is these moments that make their inevitable fate tug on our heartstrings even more.

Lady Agatha Danbury and Viscountess Violet Bridgerton

Female friendships are some of the strongest bonds to ever exist when they are properly nurtured, consistently challenged, and filled with honesty and reliability. If you’ve seen both seasons of Bridgerton, then you are already aware of the bonds built amongst Charlotte, Agatha, and Violet. In Queen Charlotte, however, we see the beginning of their relationships as they are much younger as well as how much closer they’ve grown together as they’ve gotten older, and the ways they have each taught each other to continue to love and love themselves.

With Lady Danbury, she begins her time married to Lord Danbury, an old man reaching the end of his time and is still trying to latch on to his high status, despite his race being a clear obstacle in doing so. While Agatha remains devoted to his every need, she loses her way, and doesn’t quite know how to live when her husband suddenly passes. While she does engage in a “friendship” with Lord Ledger, Violet’s father, she never divulges this information to Violet, even in the adult years of their friendship, preferring to tell the story how she declined a marriage to Queen Charlotte’s brother.

It’s through the conversations that Lady Danbury has with Violet that we understand that she has live her entire life curating who she is based on the overall person that Lord Danbury once was. It is after she denies Charlotte’s brother that she learns to live and love for herself, however she pleases, and she gives this same advice to Violet, reminding her that she had the choice to love and she can choose to love again, whether permanently or temporarily.

For Violet, however, she pushes the button to challenge Lady Danbury into admitting truths about her relationship with Violet’s father. And while she does not get a clear admission, there is a subtle and quiet understanding of what happened, and Violet eventually respects the need to let it stay in the past. No matter may have happened years ago, the love and friendship these two women carry between one another is far more sacred and important than anything else.

Queen Charlotte and Lady Agatha Danbury

Continuing on with the strength of female friendships, Charlotte and Agatha are no strangers to one another, with Agatha immediately being requested to be a part of the Queen’s court. Their friendship has always been one filled with advice and gossip, but in this particular series, we see a push and pull between the two that challenges both to find themselves trusting of the other.

In the case of Charlotte, Agatha urges her to take the necessary steps that will enforce changes within their society, particularly for those who are not the default and have never been guaranteed a status within society. That involves doing what is necessary to secure her marriage to King George as well as providing a legitimate heir to the throne. It’s not until Agatha asks, “Do you not see us?” that Charlotte understands her role is much bigger than she realized. Not only is she a queen but she is also a queen that gives hope, status, and elevation to people who like her.

Likewise, Charlotte also challenges Agatha in return by the end of the series when she is made aware that Agatha has been worried about losing her title as “Lady Danbury” due to the death of her husband. It is then that she takes on the role of queen as Agatha advised, and reassures her that titles will not be stripped. However, she also sternly demands that faith in Charlotte as the Queen should be maintained for the benefit of both women. If there’s anything that can be learned from these two women, it’s that love within friendships is not just about supporting and uplifting one another. It is also about challenging each other and keeping each other in check in a way that benefits both parties in positive ways.

Brimsley and Reynolds

There cannot be a discussion of romance and love in Queen Charlotte without bringing up the quiet yet endearing side story involving the Queen and King’s secretary, Brimsley and Reynolds. Upon seeing them together for the first time, it is clear they have an already established relationship but it’s one that is kept secret for obvious reasons. A queer romance in the Bridgerton series is nothing new, as it is casually brought up as a something that should be normal and accepted, even within such an elevated society.

But while there are spicy moments between the two, there’s something unique about the relationship between Brimsley and Reynolds that has viewers begging for more time with them. While they have physical and emotional affections for each other, they are both still tied to their duties to the Queen and King. Protecting the King’s condition and keeping his intentions under wraps is Reynold’s responsibility, no matter how much more distant he becomes. On the other hand, Brimsley is pushy and demanding of answers in the name of the Queen, as he attempts to bring Charlotte the information she is entitled to have.

There is a strange level of gentle care and innocence between the two that cannot be taken away by a sense of duty or any length of distance. And it’s clear as day that no matter what, feelings will always remain, especially when we see Brimsley dancing in the courtyard by himself, pretending Reynolds was right there dancing with him. Fans can only hope that Shondaland give us more Brimsley and Reynolds because they are one story about which we are incredibly curious.

Moving On…

While many of us wonder what plans are in store for season 3 of Bridgerton, there’s no question that it will be insanely difficult to top what we saw in Queen Charlotte. The series brought us heartbreak and pain, but also light and unconditional love, all of which stays with us forever. Whatever is to come, we’ll be waiting and we’ll be watching. And most definitely, we will be doing some rewatching as well!

Creative Team: Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast via Nerd Initiative!

For this entry, we are riding shotgun along the horror on the highway as Image Comics’ latest hit keeps rolling along! PHANTOM ROAD #3 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands furthers the mystery behind the supernatural sci-fi road Dom and Birdie now travel on.

Let’s take a deeper dive on the latest chapter, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

How We Got Here

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Fate has taken a truck driver named Dom and a crash survivor named Birdie & made them an unlikely duo connected to a mysterious object. This object appears to have crossed them into a mirrored dimension with faceless figures trying to acquire what they possess. Last issue sent the pair to a truck stop with a mysterious figure being very cryptic about what the truth is.

The truck stop itself seemed suspicious as well, with the pair leaving and appearing to be back to their rightful time. However, things have changed with the pair being in pain when separated from the object and a killed faceless being turning into a human form. Now law enforcement are closing in to investigate, Dom and Birdie are searching for answers and dodging the law.

Down The Road

This issue opens up with FBI agent Theresa Weaver arriving on the scene. She immediately takes over the case from the local officers, who appear to be in way over their heads. Weaver takes some pictures of the scene and breaks down the victim’s remains.

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Leaving the scene, Weaver is in contact with her supervisor going over notes. Readers clearly see that the FBI knows more about what is going on than they’re letting on. At her hotel room, she is visited by Deputy Dunn, who informs her of the initial accident involving Birdie.

Once at the scene, Weaver starts adding things up. Readers start getting more pieces of the puzzle revealed as Weaver furthers her investigation. The final act shows Weaver’s connection to the case might not be as cut and dry as is let on. That said, no one is expecting what unfolds in the closing moments. The mystery surrounding the object has just begun.

Story Review

Lemire takes the lead characters out for this issue and devotes the time to establishing Agent Weaver to the audience. Weaver comes across as a no-nonsense agent but as things move on, Lemire sets up the slow reveal, attaching her to what is going on with Dom and Birdie.

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

The overall story had some clues revealed but still has fans guessing at what the true nature of things are. The pacing was fine as the “day in the life” model for Weaver worked to connect her to the readers. The closing sequence was a solid surprise and threw more mystery onto an already growing tale.

Artwork Overview

Walta and Bellaire keep the gritty and dark feel of the story going even without Dom or Birdie involved. The mannerisms of Agent Weaver play into her familiarity with the case at hand without tipping off too much.

The interactions with the locals establish this quickly carrying through to the panels with Deputy Dunn. The closing sequence gave this issue a kick of excitement with a strong simple panel to put a closing on the transpiring events.

FINAL POINT: 7.5 OUT OF 10

Lemire, Walta and the team put the spotlight on a character adding a new element to an already combustible situation. Solid storytelling and artwork keep things rolling as the highway to horror shifts gears into a new lane for readers to follow.

I AM Iron Man #3 – The Iron Shogun and His Best Friend!

The audience will never get tired of stories about heroes… Truer words have never been said!

Once again I am nearly at a loss for words when attempting to review this series. I AM Iron Man #3 is beautiful, hopeful, nostalgic, and heartbreaking all at once.

This review contains spoilers for I AM Iron Man #3.

Story:

The story, while seemingly confusing at first, is elegant and actually quite simple. Iron Man and War Machine need to save a little boy’s mother. We are dropped into this issue in the middle of the story, Iron Man seems to be in feudal Japan, sporting one of the most incredibly beautiful armors ever put on the page. While dual wielding red flaming energy swords, he cuts down what looks like goblins and is directed by someone we cannot see. Iron Man then meets up with War Machine, also in period armor, and we get a few more clues that this is scenario is not reality.

The Iron Shogun: I AM Iron Man #3

Trough some well placed flashbacks, the story becomes clear. Mojo has kidnapped a woman and her son has asked Iron Man and War Machine to help get her back. Tony and Rhodey have to play the parts that Mojo has set for them in order to free the boy’s mother and get all of them out of Mojoworld!

Of course, this would not be an issue of I AM Iron Man if the wonderful creative duo didn’t reduce me to tears… and with the last few pages we are reminded of just how important Maria Stark was to Tony. Mother’s Day is a rough day for Tony Stark. The quick progression of mother and son sharing in good times is brought to a crashing halt with a gut punch of a panel that made me drop the comic and exclaim “OH COME ON GUYS!”

Writing:

Murewa Ayodele continues to impress. Each issue of this series has been better than the last. The layout of this story, starting in the middle and allowing the reader to sit with the confusion for just the right amount of time was perfect. I never felt annoyed or lost, just curious to see how our protagonists got into the situation they were in and who was pulling the strings. By the end of this issue, every question I had was answered with no loose threads hanging.

Artwork:

Dotun Akande has become my favorite Iron Man artist, without question. This was the most beautiful and enchanting Iron Man comic that I have ever read. The colors, designs, and movement on each panel was everything one could ask for. On top of the the overall artwork, the layout of these books have been impeccable. I’m also impressed with the fact that, without a caption and without any dialogue, I know what era of Iron Man these stories take place in by the design of the Iron Man armor. Truly epic attention to detail with this artwork.

Conclusion:

This creative team has yet to disappoint. I cannot see them missing a step any time soon. Marvel, please give this duo an ongoing Iron Family series. They know what they are doing and I want more! Please, if you have not been reading this series, remedy that mistake immediately. This is peak Iron Man being told by two people at the top of their game.

BLACK CLOAK #5 – The Story Continues

BLACK CLOAK #5 – Image Comics

Creative Team: Kelly Thompson , Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast via Nerd Initiative!

For this entry, we’re diving into the fantasy murder mystery unfolding in the pages of Image Comics’ latest hit series. BLACK CLOAK #5 by Kelly Thompson , Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey brings the investigation into the death of Kiros’ royal family into uncharted territory. How will Phaedra Essex and Pax handle their latest obstacle in uncovering the truth? Let’s not wait another minute and jump into the brand-new chapter, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Quick Recap

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax have been assigned to solve the murder case involving Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros. Like any high-profile case, the pressure is on the law-enforcement team to find answers. This case hits close to Essex because at one point, she was connected to Freyall. Readers saw their past play out in the last issue connecting the emotional impact this case is having on Essex.

With the city on the verge of a public meltdown, time is running out on the pair to provide closure. Other factors have come into play such as the Kiros Three (the most powerful humans on Kiros), who have a vested interest in how things play off. Even after last issue’s revelation that Freyall’s death appears to have been a suicide, there still is more to uncover with this case. Their latest lead puts them on a path to meet an unexpected figure: PHINNEAS II OF THANE, Essex’s father!

The Story Continues

This issue opens up with the Black Cloaks sitting inside the home of Phinneas. The tension is palpable as Essex is none too happy to see her dad. In contrast, Phinneas is disregarding Essex’s warning of how the Kiros Three are appearing to pin the crime on him. Essex lays out her theory that the queen is involved in Freyal’s death but it falls on deaf ears. Phinneas laughs at what is proposed and throws something back right in Essex’s face to counter. When the cloaks are ready to leave, Phinneas offers a name that might be of more service.

Image and its logos are ® and © 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

In the meantime, Essex is shown major revelations by her brother Devaki that further widens the gap between her and her estranged father. There’s little time to process what’s happening as Phinneas’ name turns out to be someone neither Essex or Pax want to see. The tension ramps up for readers as more clues are given that lead to more options being brought to the forefront.

What will Essex do with this new information? A course of direction is set that puts the Black Cloaks closer to the truth but at what cost? Can Essex and Pax find a way to the truth? What do they find when journeying on this new plan of attack? More questions are formed as the pair (and readers) stumble onto a vision within the final panel that adds more fuel to an already mysterious fire.

Story Review

Thompson keeps taking readers deeper into the drama with this latest chapter. The family dynamic between Essex and Phinneas stood out as it showed Essex in a new light. The strain on her relationship played out, making Essex face a wide variety of emotions. There is a scene involving a painting that readers can instantly see Essex demonstrate this point. The build-up to Phinneas’s person of interest comes off big due to his nonchalant ways when getting questioned. It is at that moment, the story shifts into high gear, sending the pair into a risky situation.

The pacing moves things right along while allowing the characters to shine when the spotlight is on them. The latter half of the book doesn’t slow down as Essex and Pax make a move that could be the break they so desperately need. The closing moments throw more questions into their case and that’s never a bad thing for the reader.

Artwork Overview

McClaren and Carey keep the panels more grounded than in recent issues to drive home the emotional pull on Essex and her father. The reactions to her father’s answers added more weight to her own dealing with the case. The scene involving the painting is another example of how visually creative this series is with every issue.

The world of Kiros pops off every panel. The painting plays into showing a different side of Essex that readers will get a more complete idea of what she is feeling in dealing with this very personal case. The actions following Phinneas’s “help” swing the story into a more shadowing feel which pays off on the final moments. The final full page panel closes up events, leaving much to process as the case deepens going into its’ next phase.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The crime drama of Kiros takes a small detour to address Essex’s family relationships before ramping back up into what has become an inescapable series. Thompson, McClaren and Carey continue to expose the wildly imaginative world of the Black Cloaks with superb writing and art. The series generates the high praise its’ getting for a reason. Don’t miss this issue on New Comic Book Day.
