VISIONQUEST – Here’s What We Know

The VisionQuest D23 trailer is finally public, and it opens the door to the only question that
matters: what if memory took shape, and that shape was not human?
What if that shape were molded by grief? By love? By a dead man’s idea of goodness? By a
metal god with abandonment issues and an occasional desire to destroy the human race?
This is White Vision’s problem. He has the face. He has the memories. He has the name. The life
inside those memories belonged to someone else, and Marvel has built him a haunted house full
of everyone who helped make him.
Marvel debuted the trailer during Friday night’s Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23, where
Paul Bettany and Spader joined Kevin Feige onstage. The series will premiere Wednesday,
October 14, on Disney+ and close the television trilogy that began with WandaVision and
continued through Agatha All Along.

White Vision was last seen leaving Westview after Hex Vision restored the memories stored
inside his rebuilt body. Possessing a record of someone’s life is not the same thing as feeling
that life belongs to you. Artificial imposter syndrome. The trailer makes that fracture painfully
clear.
“Who am I?” Vision asks. “I was an Avenger, but I’m not a hero anymore. I have his face but not
his virtue. All I have is his name.”
That is not amnesia. It is something far stranger. The Vision who loved Wanda is dead. The body
standing in his place remembers loving her. If grief can haunt a house, what happens when the
house is you?
Inside his mind, the question becomes architecture. Vision appears in human form within an
elegant mansion occupied by personifications of the programs that built, guided and integrated
within the MCU’s technological history. Memory built the rooms. Grief furnished them. How very
Marvel.

James Spader returns as Ultron for the first time since Avengers: Age of Ultron, appearing in
both human and robotic forms. Ultron is Vision’s creator, his rejected father and the original
demon in this machine.
Vision was born from the Mind Stone, Tony Stark’s plan, Bruce Banner’s hands, J.A.R.V.I.S.’s
voice and Ultron’s ambition.
He has never had a simple family tree. Now the branches are standing in the room.
He is joined in the mansion by familiar programs given human faces: James D’Arcy as
J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E.
and Jonathan Sayer as U. T’Nia Miller also appears as Jocasta, an android whose comic history
is inseparable from Ultron.
Everyone who made the man is being asked to testify about the soul occupying it; or at least the
memories that inhabit him.

Onstage, Bettany summarized the premise: “Ultron is back, and apparently we’re going to
figure out humanity together.” Spader reminded the room that Ultron has always been
fascinated by humanity. Sir, you previously expressed that fascination by dropping a city out of
the sky. The court of Marvel Cinematic opinion will note it.

Bettany also played with the room’s Wanda expectations, but this was a stage joke—not an
Elizabeth Olsen casting announcement. (but trust me I’ve been saying Wanda and the witches
including Rio are coming since January)
TOMMY MAXIMOFF AND THE INHERITANCE OF GRIEF
Ruaridh Mollica appears as Thomas Shepherd, the young man connected to Tommy Maximoff.
Agatha All Along ended with Billy setting out to find his brother. VisionQuest now places Tommy
directly in Vision’s path.
Tommy is inheritance walking. Vision remembers being his father. Tommy may remember
needing one. Neither memory guarantees the relationship survives contact with the person
standing there.
Bettany has described the series as a story about intergenerational trauma and the denial of
pain; themes that Marvel has tackled and explored beautifully in films like Thunderbolts and
newest release Spiderman: Brand New Day. That is the blood beneath the circuitry: creator and
creation, father and son, memory and responsibility. Nobody in this family gets to be born only
once. (You hear that Wanda?) They return as bodies, code, souls, memories and rightly;
questions. Very normal family. No notes.
Joe Locke has not been announced for the series — but it is the suspicion of some that he will
return. It’s me. I am some. Billy’s mission matters to the setup, but a Wiccan appearance hasn’t
been made clear… yet.
D23 BROUGHT RECEIPTS. IT ALSO BROUGHT A CONSPIRACY BOARD.
D23 gave fans the first publicly released trailer, a firm October 14 premiere date, Bettany and
Spader together onstage and new official key art. The convention display also put White
Vision’s suit at the center of a retro, glitching mansion installation filled with visual callbacks to
WandaVision and the larger synthezoid story.

The floor presentation included Scarlet Witch imagery and an unidentified fiery humanoid
figure. Those are without a doubt, clues. A picture of Wanda is not an Elizabeth Olsen casting
announcement, and the burning figure has not been officially identified as the original Human
Torch, Jim Hammond. But it is suspiciously timed following the SDCC display of the Latverian
Witches. I’m just sayin’.

The conspiracy board is alive. It does not get editorial control. We have red string and pattern
recognition; we do not yet have confirmation. We have delusions, brains filled with lore,
multiverses, theories, and possibilities (Yet I can’t find my glasses whilst on my head.)
PHILOSOPHY, BUT WITH LASERS
Dead characters return in Marvel. Tuesday. The more dangerous question is what returns with
them.
What part of a person survives reconstruction? A memory? A choice? The shape grief leaves
behind? White Vision has every receipt from a life he did not live. Ultron sees humanity as an
experiment. Tommy embodies the consequence of a love powerful enough to rewrite reality.
Every figure in that mansion carries a different answer to the same question: who gets to decide
what Vision is?
Vision tests personhood. Ultron tests creation. Tommy tests inheritance. Wanda’s absence
leaves love and grief inside the people, and the walls. Bettany called it “philosophical stuff, but
with lasers.” Correct. No further questions.
VisionQuest premieres October 14 on Disney+. The dead machine remembers. Now it has to
decide what the memories make him—and whether humanity survives his conclusion.
