The Watchlist is back, and this week, we are diving into the world of Indie films.
MORE FROM NI’S MOVIE TEAM HERE
I have 3 different ones that will satisfy every Indie Film lover.
1. Backspot

Backspot is one that I knew about a couple of years ago, but didn’t get to check out until last month. It stars Canadian actress Devery Jacobs, and she shines in this film. The film’s full description reads:
“A driven cheerleader struggles to handle the pressure when she and her girlfriend are both selected for an elite cheer squad.”
I’ve grown up watching the Bring It On films, and Backspot is up there for me in terms of cheerleading films. This film is so good, and everyone who hasn’t seen it, needs to check it out. This is currently streaming on Tubi.
2. The King Tide

The King Tide is a movie that I knew about, but really hadn’t checked it out until March. This film is not at all what you expect, and it keeps you on your toes the entire time. The film’s description reads:
“After the mayor of an idyllic island village discovers a child with mysterious powers awash on their shores, the once peaceful community devolves into civil war, torn over the belief that the child is the next saviour.”
This is such a good film, and it’s not necessarily a horror film, but it is a psychological thriller, and the ending will not be what you expect at all. This is free to watch on YouTube.
3. 20th Century Women

A24 & Annapurna’s 20th Century Women is such a fun portrayal of found family and what it takes to raise a child. The film’s description reads:
“With 20th Century Women, acclaimed filmmaker Mike Mills (the Academy Award®- winning Beginners) brings us a richly multilayered, funny, heart-stirring celebration of the complexities of women, family, time, and the connections we search for our whole lives. Set in Santa Barbara, the film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing: Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor.”
I caught this film back in March as well, and I love this movie. It’s so fun and colorful, and it shows what living with found family is like, and it’s so fantastic. This is right now streaming on YouTube.
