Season 2 of Peacemaker on HBO Max has been a roller coaster of emotions, chaos, and fun from the start. Episode 5 is no different.
WARNING: Spoilers for the first 4 episodes ahead.
Chris (John Cena) is struggling with a life he never had, and a life he thinks he could. However, it would never be real. Last we saw Peacemaker, he was driving to meet Harcourt (Jennifer Holland). He needed to talk to her so he could answer a question the other world Harcourt asked him. We see him head to her, but she’s not the only one waiting for him. It’s a trap. Meanwhile, Eagly is being hunted by a man with NO bird blindness. Also known as “Captain Cultural Appropriation.” Or Red St. Wild (Michael Rooker).

Episode 5: BACK TO THE SUTURE
We kick off episode 5 with another flashback that makes not only the current season seem clearer, but also season 1. We’re at a funeral, for someone gone too soon. Which in the world of comic book characters has a funny way of leading to wanting revenge. Back to the present and Peacemaker is goofily, but geniusly (yes that’s a made up word, but seems like a word Vigilante would use), walking into the ambush that Harcourt and Rick Flag Sr., perfectly laid out for him.
Chris is still eager to have his question answered. Even if he knows he won’t like the answer, or that he’s risking his life to get it. In the end all the moves he makes this episode, impact more people than he realizes.

As Rick Sr. is determined to prevent another Metropolis situation he’s got another trick up his sleeve (If ‘Metropolis situation is confusing, Superman will be on HBO Max tomorrow, September 19th). All the while, Eagly is on a spiritual journey all his own.
It Just Keeps Getting Better
Once again Peacemaker has absolutely killed the perfect balance of storytelling, action, comedy, and heart. So much heart! This season has somehow managed to make season 1 even better than it already is. Every flashback fills in so much about a character, a moment, or a reaction. Harcourt’s feelings and attitude toward Chris in season 1 become clearer. As does Peacemaker’s decisions. While we knew his childhood was traumatic and toxic, actually seeing bits of it throughout this season, makes you feel that much worse for him.

The saddest part of it all is truly how much he doesn’t see the love he has. He’s been rejected so much that he’s not paying attention to the family he has made. A family that spent this episode trying to show that to him. However, they’re all severely messed up, so it’s not always obvious, but it’s there.
Overall Grade: 9.5/10
All in all, there is so much to love about this episode, Back to the Suture. From the flashback at the beginning I was immediately sucked in. To see how everything played out, made me continually go…oh! That was clever. Only to wrap up with a bittersweet moment. While Eagly truly showed what he is capable of in this episode, Freddie Stroma showed us a side of Vigilante we hadn’t seen before. A side that broke my heart a bit. Even if he genuinely enjoys sawing up people with his BFF, he’s just precious.
Despite this show being pure entertainment we also have to praise James Gunn for bringing awareness to bird blindness. Too many were unaware how serious is. Now they know. PEACE!
