The Story and Writing

After Harley Quinn’s arch nemesis, Althea Klang, admitted to having feelings for her, Harley has been struggling with the question of whether or not she should go on a date with the villain. Gathering together the best people she knows, Chicken Fingers, Mrs. Grimaldi, and her own Quintellect, Harley seeks out guidance on whether or not she should date Althea. Interrupted by a knock on the door, Harley is greeted by some kind of well-spoken robot, who goes by Clang, that is out to take her down. Could this be an attack from her confusing beloved Althea?

Turns out that’s not it. Instead, it’s actually Mrs. Grimaldi’s grandson, Richie, who Harley turned down a date from Harley and is seeking justice for his hurt feelings. As strange as that is, what’s even weirder is that he is dressed in a metal supervillain that gives him powers. After some questioning, Harley finds out that there’s a pretty shady business going down in the neighborhood. It’s time for Harley to put on her hero hat once again.

Elliott Kalan continues this wild comic run that’s so unhinged, that it fits Harley Quinn perfectly. This time, we get to see Harley come to terms with her own mistakes and shows compassion towards Richie, which gives her room to show compassion to herself. There’s a lot of growth for Harley Quinn as a character that you can clearly see in this run, and Kalan makes that shine brightly.

The Art

The artwork for Harley Quinn #53 perfectly matches the storyline and the overall tone of the comic. Mindy Lee, the artist of the comic, uses a lot of detail in each panel, while the colorist, Triona Farrell, matches those details with their use of juxtaposing colors. The artwork has to be wild and zany to be authentic to Harley Quinn as a character, and I’d say the artists nailed that.

Final Thoughts

Harley Quinn #53 continues to feel authentic to the character, and gives us a great look at Harley’s growth. I look forward to seeing what the creative team does in the next issue!
