The Story and Writing

The future is what we make it, but does the same go for the past? In Doomed 2099 #1, that’s certainly what Doctor Doom of the year 2099 hopes for. During the One World Under Doom event, Doctor Doom had to go up against so many heavy hitters, including the Earth’s mightiest heroes and even Dormammu. He’s had his fair share of challenges, but what happens when the challenge is against himself?

Doctor Doom receives an unexpected visit from his future self, who’s accompanied by his team of Phoenix, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Bishop, The Maestro, Deathlok, and Old Man Logan. Doom from 2099 is there on a simple mission; to convince the World Emperor to relinquish his powers of Sorcerer Supreme before something catastrophic happens. As you can guess, the Sorcerer Supreme has no plans to agree to this plan and is more than willing to fight for it.

Seeing Doom versus Doom was as exciting a fight as you’d expect and Frank Tieri made it just that, an exciting time. What was interesting was seeing a Doctor Doom that was motivated by regret of his actions having to go against the World Emperor who is fully confident in his decisions. Two completely different Doctor Dooms, but still both powerhouses in their own rights. Also with Doctor Doom from the future is his overpowered coalition really showed just how powerful the Sorcerer Supreme is. All in all, it was a fantastic comic, and a great read especially for when you’re waiting for more One World Under Doom comics.

The Art

Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar are the mastermind artists behind Doomed 2099 #1 with Andrew Dalhouse as the color artist and Travis Lanham as the letterer. All artists on the creative team showcased their talents in the most beautiful of ways and gave the comic so much depth while elevating the story. Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar did a brilliant job at showing each powerset, mixing abstract art vibrant colors from Andrew Dalhouse.

Speaking of Dalhouse, he managed to make every single page pop, making it hard to take your eyes off of the panels. Travis Lanham, who always delivers when it comes to quality of the lettering, made you feel the power in each word uttered by both Doctor Dooms. This was all tied together by the fantastic cover art thanks to Derrick Chew. All together, the artists really outdid themselves with Doomed 2099 #1.

Final Thoughts

Marvel has been knocking it out of the park when it comes to Doctor Doom and Doomed 2099 #1 is no exception of that. Can’t wait to see what the creative team does next!
