The Story and Writing
Commissioner Maggie Sawyer had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting a woman by the name of Olivia Pearce. Something just didn’t seem right. Maggie heard on good authority from the mayor that Olivia showed the mayor something in her face, and now the mayor is in the hospital in a psychotic break. Keeping this in mind, Maggie looks and looks at Olivia’s face, but sees nothing peculiar.
Even though she didn’t see what the mayor was talking about, she can’t shake this feeling that there’s something wrong with her. Maggie does what any former detective would do and investigates Olivia, which brings her to absolutely nothing. Evidently, Olivia Pearce appeared out of thin air. So, that begs the questions, who is she?
While all of this mystery intensifies, Nightwing has been hauled up inside Titans Tower that’s been infected by a monster.
Dan Watters delivers a really compelling story that’s full of twists and turns that you can’t guess are coming. My only complaint is that I wish Nightwing was actually involved in the story, but he’s stuck inside Titans Tower for this story. Outside of that, I have to say that the mystery surrounding what Zanni is and the background of Olivia Pearce was extraordinarily compelling. Maggie Sawyer has stumbled onto more than she expected, and I’m excited to see where the story goes.
The Art
Francesco Francavilla takes lead with being the artist, colorist, and the cover artist of the comic, and he exceeded expectations on all fronts. The art of Nightwing 2025 Annual #1 is drenched in magnificent detail partnered with juxtaposing contrasting colors that give the comic an interesting nightlife vibe. There are some panels that Francavilla perfectly captured the creepiness that comes with the mysterious antagonist, which sent a shiver down my spine. Along with Francavilla, Wes Abbott joins as the letterer and brings so much depth to the words of the comic. All in all, the artists really knocked it out of the park!
Final Thoughts
I found the story to be very interesting, and kept me hooked into the comic from the first page with Maggie Sawyer.
Overall Grade – 7.9/10
