The Penultimate episode of Star Trek Lower Decks, the fan-favorite series, is upon us! We finally get a reason for the season! Not only that, but this episode has all the fan service and in-series throwbacks that I’ve been waiting for this entire FINAL SEASON!
Captian Boims! Ladies and Gents
Just a reminder, Bradward’s transporter clone William, aptly named after his Cap’n-Crush William T. Riker, has been recruited by Section 31 and advanced to the rank of Captian. Starfleet sent him to fix all these rifts. Trekking around the multiverse in a Defiant-Class ship named Anaximander, Captain Boilmer fills out his crew with a ragtag group of Multiversal Misfits. But not just any misfits!!
Topol, Curzon Dax, Garrack with holospouse EMH Julian Bashir, and finally, after waiting all these months since the trailer, Ensign Harry Kim working alongside Ensign Harry Kim and Ensign Kim including Ensign Kim joining Ensign Kim with Ensign Kim, also featuring LTJG Harry Kim!
Unfortunately, Captain Boims has had enough multiversal hopping and is tired of finding slight differences in the infinity of the multiverse. But that’s all about to change!
A Rift Apart
While the crew of the Anaximander is picking up new crew members, they come across another Mariner in engineering gold. Doubling up with Topol, they both figure out that there are always two rifts open at one time, so they trap the ship, causing the rifts.
We finally have a reason for these rifts! It’s a totally different federation that instead of exploring new worlds and new civilizations, they learn about the multiverse itself!
Bonus: The ship’s captain is none other than Lily Sloane. Yeah, Alfre Woodard reprises her role from Star Trek: First Contact. Except in her universe, Zephram Cochrane made a Multidimensional drive instead of the standard warp drive!
Eventually, Lt. Kim goes mad after seeing all his ensign counterparts, and instead of helping the crew of the Beagle, he rips a huge hole in reality. The only way it can be stopped is directed at one single universe, and Captain Boims sends it home! WHY?! Who else can take care of this except the people he trusts, his friends?
Thoughts from the Captains Chair
THIS EPISODE GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS MORE THAN I CAN REMEMBER. We finally get an episode this season that encapsulates everything we’ve wanted from Lower Decks with all the throwbacks, actors, cameos, and every little thing that was meticulously put into this episode for a reason.
But at the center of this show is its heart. Star Trek has always been about its characters, and this episode goes above and beyond blending fan service with character service.
Star Trek Lower Decks: Fissure Quest is a PERFECT 10 out of 10
