Miles Morales, is one of those characters that is an avid comic reader loves. In issue number twenty, it starts out showing the family dynamic between Miles and his family.
Miles seems to have someone in his family that has super powers as well, because of the way that his neck is drawn in most of the comic panels. The greatest task though, is that Miles has to babysit his little sister, Billie.
It seems in most of the issue, Miles looses track of time. He is all over the place, trying to be Spiderman and save the city. He also realizes that he wants to spend time with his family. I did enjoy that he embraces both sides of his heritage, with being half African-American, and Hispanic. As the reader, I enjoyed hearing Spanish among some of the conversations that Miles has within his community.
While Miles is fighting crime, a shocking surprise comes. Ms. Marvel comes in to come and assist Miles in helping him fight. It was nice to see their conversation back and forth, and Miles was shocked as well.
At the end of the comic, we are introduced to this new person, Sandra who seems to me is a threat. Sandra has some robotic armor on, and it seems that she can time travel as well. I like that possibly in the next issue, there might be some time travel situations going on. There is a cliffhanger at the end, and we don’t see Sandra anymore.
What I love about issue twenty, is first the dialogue. It is refreshing to see Miles have such a tight relationship with his family and friends. I also like that Miles is trying to balance both spending time with both, and it’s typical for a teenager to grasp how to balance that. As far as the art, it literally pops off the page. Each panel has detail about what each character looks like (for example, Miles’s little sister hair). Especially the shading and seeing all the different shades of Miles’s friends and family. I also enjoy his suit, it’s black, with the red spider that is across his suit.
I can’t wait to see what is next for Miles, and how he handles trying to be a superhero, when he is not occupied with responsibilities. I hope he has an opportunity to have time to be a regular teenager, but, with being Spider-Man that’s hard to do.
