This review was made possible by early screeners of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School. Pretty Little Liars: Summer School premieres on Max on May 9th with two episodes. New episodes will air every Thursday.
A liar is always a liar, right? This second season of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School dives right back in with all of the girls. At the beginning, it felt like a little reunion again. All of the girls are accounted for, Imogen Adams (Bailee Madison), Tabby Haworthe (Chandler Kinney), Faran Bryant (Zaria), Minnie “Mouse” Honrada (Malia Pyles) and Noa Olivar (Maia Reficco). We’re also introduced to a new character Kelly Beasley (Mallory Bechtel) this season.
Within the second season, the girls are preparing for a summer of relaxation. After all they went through during the school year, they are ready for the freedom of summer. Unfortunately, they are informed that their grades has suffered so they must take summer school. Their principal says it’s only in the mornings and that they are dismissed after they complete the classes for the afternoon.
It is revealed in season two that Imogen’s baby has been adopted by two dads. Imogen is longing to still be an active parent, but also trying to be a regular teenager. All of the girls had taken on summer jobs in the mix: Imogen as a waitress, Tabby working at the movie theater and Faran as a lifeguard. Speaking of Faran, she is still finding her way after she had her dance injury.
The girls also are still doing both group and individual therapy after the first season, who is facilitated by Dr. Anne Sullivan (Annabeth Gish). It seems that the therapy helps the girls during the times of needing to figure things out. Therapy is a good way for the girls to talk out what is happening in their personal lives, as well as Dr. Sullivan supporting their decisions as they navigate the summer.
I was only able to see the first five episodes, but each episode is explosive. All of the girls are able to branch out, but also their experience with “A” from the first season binds them together. I also think most of the characters outside of the group, are able to move the story along. A lot of the scenes, often had the girls involving themselves on “side quests” but are still together at majority of the time.
I’m excited to see the next few episodes, to see where the liars end up. I really hope that they land on their feet at the end of it. I also hope that they enjoy the rest of the summer, but you know there’s always trouble around the corner.
I give the season a 9/10.
