UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: BLOOD OF THE WOLF MAN #3: Seeing is Believing

All his life Adam has been lied to about what happened to his mother, his brother, and about who he truly is. Even though he has given himself to the cops for the murder of the college students, they don’t believe him when he says that he is a Werewolf. They say seeing is believing and for the town, they are about to witness a horror they never could have dreamt of!

The Story:

Joshua Williamson has been so good at building up this slow burn story and slow cranking up the heat allowing for the anger and frustration to build for Adam. You can feel the pain he has beneath the surface as his Father, Henry insists on ignoring him as he always has done. The picture that has been painted draws us in and allowed me to sympathize with Adam as someone who had a troubled upbringing myself. It makes the switch to outright horror hit the mark within this issue. You can feel the moment things were about to shift and the immense rage that was spread across the pages.

What stood out to me the most within this issue was how Williamson allowed for the team to let the imagination run rampant. As Adam tears his way through the station we aren’t being told explicitly what is going down. This to me allows the impact to land much harder and the fear to truly set in as the Wolf Man has become unleashed.

The Art:

The artwork carries immense weight and storytelling ability throughout this whole issue. Adam’s eyes are full of pain and innocence which Martin captures with the coloring. Leomacs does an incredible job at nailing the transformation from small and innocent teenager into a massive and horrifying creature. The way the colors turned to red and Adam’s clothes slowly tore apart into pieces nailed this sequence. In terms of the raw strength and violence there were panels showcasing how powerful and full of rage the Wolf is. DC’s lettering fills the pages with screams of his victims and it lets our imaginations run wild and it’s what this team does incredibly well making the horror elements stick.

Final Thoughts:

Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man #3 unleashes the simmering rage that has been building beneath the surface for 3 issues. We’ve been anticipating the Werewolf and it’s rage and violence but, nothing could have prepared us for what that truly meant. I love this story. It is a love letter to the classic horror while not shying away from what makes this creature intimidating.
