When I heard about Creature Commandos starting off the DCU, I was excited. As an animation connoisseur, I knew that James Gunn can handle animation. As he has proven himself with live-action films like Guardians of the Galaxy, all the way to Peacemaker. James knows tone and knows how to hook an audience.
In this first episode, we are re-introduced to Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and again she is gathering a new team. Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) is not optimistic about the team, but he’s on board to work with them. Amanda explains that she can’t use humans anymore, but never says anything about using monsters. Quickly, as the audience we are introduced to this team. There is G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk). As well as Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao).
Each person has their own personal backstory as to why they are there. I really was intrigued by the Bride of Frankenstein’s story. As the audience we are introduced to Eric (David Harbour) who is seeking out to get his wife back. There is also a Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova), and also a sorceress named Circe (Anya Chalontra). Princess Ilana throughout these episodes, has a really big crush on Rick Flag Sr., which escalates in episode two. Overall these characters interact at times, but they still are in the early stages of working together.
I’m interested to see how they all work together as a team. Episode two brought a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to see episode three. Some of the moments that I really enjoyed were the fight scenes, as well as the vocal performances. As stated by James Gunn plenty of times, these voice actors will be their live-action counterparts and will appear throughout the DCU. The animation style also reminds me of Invincible, it’s very crisp and each monster has a different look. I like how Doctor Phosphorus’s flames are drawn, and you can see them moving with him as he moves. I also like the detail of the Bride’s scars.
These two episodes were a good step in the right direction. I’m hopeful that the rest of the series will be just as delightful to watch.
I give these two episodes a 9.0/10.
