‘The Color Purple’: A Refreshing Take On A Classic Film

Published:

When I heard the announcement that The Color Purple was getting a reboot, I was stunned. The 1985 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover was interesting already. When I heard that it was going to the musical take on this, I was excited. In 2013, I had the honor of going to see The Color Purple, when I was at my college, Kean University. For Black History Month, they had gifted a trip to see the musical. I fell in love with the musical immediately because of the performances alone. So, due to this, I knew the movie would be amazing. I did not get a chance to see Fantasia Barrino on Broadway, but hearing that she was playing Celie was comforting. I also was excited because I did see Danielle Brooks in the Broadway version of ‘The Color Purple’ as Sophia, and that made me smile.

The time spent with these beloved characters was heartwarming, yet so familiar. I was a theater enthusiast  growing up, so hearing all the music made me so emotional. I loved that they flushed out the characters during this remake. ‘Mister’, played by Coleman Domingo, was great and he took me right back to why I had an issue with him in the first place. Halle Bailey also as young Nettie was a great performance as well. Again, I applaud the many voices and the dancing in this movie. If you are someone who loves movie musicals, you will love this one.

I cannot give enough praise to each and every performer, Fantasia, Taraji, Danielle, and Coleman. This cast was stacked. Also, there are a few cameos that will make you smile as well. This movie was great and I hope to see it again, considering the many things that they brought to the forefront, even from the book. It seems that Oprah and Steven Spielberg, who directed the first movie, took their time and added that ‘WOW’ factor that it was missing. I will give this movie a solid, 9.5/10.
