Let the Games Begin

Jumping into X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse, the story starts in Aswan, Egypt with Apocalypse stating how soft Earth has become without his guidance. The world will continue to be without his guidance has he takes the throne on Arrako, but he needs a successor on Earth. For hundreds of years, Apocalypse has been testing the mutants of the world to ensure that only the most strong and powerful have survived. So what is one of the world’s oldest mutants to do? Have a competition, of course!

The Competitors

A competition for his heir is in play and he has sought out mutants he think would be the best to compete. Wolverine, Rictor, The Gorgon, Penance, Mirage, Forge, Mister Sinister, Cypher, Cable, Exodus, Emma Frost, and Armageddon Girl all must battle and only one can be the winner. I must say, Apocalypse has picked a great line up for this competition. It was also cool to see some of the mutants turn him and his competition down after enduring the trauma Apocalypse put on them.

IS 2024 THE X-MEN’S YEAR?

The Art

I love the art style of X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse! I like how detailed the drawings are in each panel and especially of each character. Every character is so well drawn with such intricate detail, you’d think it was their own personal story. The flashback panels give a really nice cool-toned contrast to the warmer tones of the present scenes. Something I really love is how Exodus looks with his brightly colored skin and gorgeous suit!

The Writing

I found the writing to do a really great job at keeping me captivated throughout the entire book. Steve Foxe did a great job showcasing each competitor and giving them a place in the story. I really like the characters chosen to compete against each other, so it’s really cool to see them all interact with each other. The plot itself is such a fun storyline to read, so I’m really excited to see where it goes.

Final Thoughts

Like I mentioned, I think the storyline is a lot of fun. The characters chosen are a great bunch that I can’t to see interact and compete against each other. With all the heavy stuff going on in the other X-Men comics currently, this feels lighter and more of a fun time.

I give this an 7.5 out of 10
